  • I'm not your ghostwriter

Besides my night job, I do online tutoring a few hours a week. Most of the time I'm looking at college essays (dear Lord, the grammar) or answering benign Social Studies questions. Most of the time I can usually work around a student who seems to want a direct "I can copy and paste this answer" type of session. Tonight though I got a doozy.

Only additional piece of background I have on this student is that it was listed as a 7th grade session.

    Tutor = me
Customer = well, you know this one

    (Customer)
[00:00:00] be a good tutor (To note: this was the opening prompt I got to tell me what his question was

    (Tutor)
[00:00:05] Hi, welcome to Tutor.com ! My name is Tutor; how may I help you today?

    (Customer)
[00:00:21] I will put question on board Question was (and I'm copying directly what he wrote) "explain the statement were people live often has a strong influence on how they live"

    (Tutor)
    [00:00:33] Okay

    (Customer)
[00:01:37] i don't understand how to explain it

    (Tutor)
[00:02:04] So you need to explain how where people live influences how they live, right?

    (Customer)
    [00:02:23] no explain the statmemntt

    (Tutor)
    [00:02:37] Okay.
[00:03:17] Well, let's put it in easy terms. Does somebody who lives in Alaska live the same way as somebody who lives in Egypt?

    (Customer)
[00:03:37] no no ones liver in egypt
    [00:03:47] sill lol

    (Tutor)
[00:03:51] No, people live in Egypt.

    (Customer)
[00:04:13] ya and no ones does

    (Tutor)
[00:05:31] People who live in Egypt, live mostly along the river Nile. Why do you think they do this?

    (Customer)
[00:05:50] because they is more foood

    (Tutor)
    [00:06:05] Right. And what else?

    (Customer)
    [00:06:37] umm more life

    (Tutor)
[00:06:52] Right, because what kind of climate is it in Egypt?

    (Customer)
    [00:07:07] hot

    (Tutor)
    [00:07:17] Right! It's a desert climate

    (Customer)
    [00:07:32] ya so

    (Tutor)
[00:07:36] Which means they have to live close to water and in a very small are to survive
[00:07:56] Would they dress for warmth or to stay cool?

    (Customer)
    [00:08:08] huh

    (Tutor)
[00:08:30] If it's desert, do you want to be wearing long sleeves or short?

    (Customer)
[00:09:04] short everything maby not even nothing and just bring supplies

    (Tutor)
[00:09:39] Well, you want to be wearing something, otherwise you'll get burned.
[00:09:46] But yes, they wear lighter clothes.
[00:09:52] Now what about in Alaska?
[00:10:05] What kind of climate is that?

    (Customer)
[00:10:21] so how does it explain the state ment

    (Tutor)
    [00:10:28] We're getting there.
[00:10:39] What kind of climate does Alaska have?

    (Customer)
[00:10:54] cold so they would have more clothes

    (Tutor)
    [00:11:00] Right!
[00:11:21] And does that mean they have to find more protected areas to live rather than just along a single river?

    (Customer)
[00:11:48] yes but how does it affect my question

    (Tutor)
[00:12:14] Because of this: would you be able to live the same way in Egypt as you do in Alaska or vice versa?

    (Customer)
[00:12:38] now you are going off subject

    (Tutor)
    [00:12:46] No, I'm not.

    (Customer)
[00:13:06] then help me not answer the question

    (Tutor)
[00:13:41] Would someone in Alaska, wearing heavy clothes, used to living in protected warm areas, be able to take that lifestyle and live the same way in Egypt?

    (Customer)
[00:14:15] NO now plz just help me explain the statement plz

    (Tutor)
    [00:14:20] Why not?

    (Customer)
    [00:14:51] STOP GOING OFF SUBJECT

    (Tutor)
    [00:14:57] I'm not.
[00:15:10] Why would someone from Alaska not be able to live the same way in Egypt?

    (Customer)
[00:15:17] then help me explain the statement

    (Tutor)
[00:15:28] I'm trying. Please answer the question.

    (Customer)
[00:15:53] then explain the statement not answer it

    (Tutor)
[00:16:07] Please answer my question, that will give you your answer
[00:16:29] Why can't someone take their lifestyle in Alaska and use it in Egypt?
    [00:17:54] I'm working on this...
    [00:18:06] Still there?

    (Customer)
[00:18:46] BECUASE THEY HAVE MORE COLD CLYMATE TEMPATURE NOW PLZ HELP ME

    (Tutor)
    [00:18:52] Right!

    (Customer)
[00:19:01] PLZ I AM GETTING MAD

    (Tutor)
[00:19:20] So do you think that the climate of an area might affect how a culture develops?

    (Customer)
[00:19:37] BUT HOE DOES IT EXPLAIN THE STATEMENT
    [00:19:45] I MEAN HOW

    (Tutor)
[00:20:47] Because you live one way in a hot climate and another in a cold climate. The same goes if you live in grassland or mountain or a forest or a temperate area or a jungle.
[00:21:19] Do you think you'd have to make special choices to survive in each of these areas?

    (Customer)
[00:21:41] YES NOW IF YOU NOT HELP ME THEN TRANCFER ME

    (Tutor)
    [00:21:58] But that's the answer

    (Customer)
    [00:22:03] WHAT

    (Tutor)
[00:22:54] Different areas have different ways of surviving them. People have to adapt to those areas in order to survive.
[00:23:11] That's why you live differently in Alaska than you do in Egypt

    (Customer)
[00:23:19] THAT NOT EXPLAINING IT NOW JUST TRANDFER ME

    (Tutor)
[00:23:34] I'm sorry that's not helpful. Have a good evening.

        Not very well, apparently.

My god, what a moron. Sorry if that's harsh, but that kid could not even understand what the statement was asking him/her to do, let alone figure out how to answer it. Sad.

I think he understood it, he was just playing dumb to get Kheldarson to write it too.

It's possible it was both. I just know that I more or less gave him what he was really asking for there at the end, and he either didn't understand or was too enraged to catch it.

                no.
                he was too stupid.

Stupidity is knowing better and doing it anyway.

I'd say he was too stupid to understand the answer he was fishing for to cut and paste. Tutors allowing him to do it is probably the only reason he has passed any courses, including the PE course! (I imagine this guy drowning when swimming, but some tutor keeps telling him to BREATH.)
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

I felt brain cells committing suicide while I read that. I can only imagine what it was like to actually deal with it.

Obviously he cannot figure out how climate affects how you live because he is not intelligent enough to figure out how to get out of his house to experience the climate around him.

Idiot was trying to get you to do the work for him. I've known far too many people like that. They feign helplessness or ignorance, and needle and cajole you until you give in and do the task yourself just to shut them up.

You did the best you could without doing it for him. I'm sorry you had to deal with him. It would serve him right to fail the assignment. Sooner or later, his attitude will get his ass kicked and he still won't understand why.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.
