As noted in the article, "Gilead" has a long history in the Bible. IIRC, it's commonly used to refer to a "promised land", in some cases with paradisaical overtones. That's exactly why it would be on any Christian theocracy's list of "cool names for our new nation", just as it's been used for a fair number of ordinary towns founded by fervent Christians, and I imagine for churches as well.
