  • An Update

OK, so I thought I would post a bit of an update about what is going on at the pub/school etc.

So, after the Easter break at school, I was forced to take a rather large paycut due to the Governments ruthless spending cuts (but that is Fratching territory). I still work five days a week at the school, but some days I am literally only there for two hours, other days nine hours, so it is a bit all over the place. I still absolutely love my job at the school, I love working with the kids in the classroom, and I love my desk job, but it has become a lot more stressful, as I am expected to do the exact same amount of work in much less time.

The paycut was quite severe, however I was still getting paid enough to cover my rent and bills. But that was it. There was no money left over for socialising or even putting a little aside for things like birthdays or Christmas. I am the kind of person who loves going out, I love going for meals, I love going to the cinema, I love travelling. I cannot simply sit in the house and just exist. So I needed to find something that would provide me with money so that I could do what I wanted to do.

Unfortunately that meant returning to the pub.

I am going to probably eat my words in a couple of weeks time, but I am actually enjoying it back at the pub. Probably because of the following reasons:

    1) I only work Monday and Tuesday day time at the pub. This gives me enough time to do a shift, go home, have sit down and then go to the office later in the evening. I do not work weekends. I made this clear when I went back. I cannot go back to working six or seven day weeks. It was only when I left the pub that I realised how exhausted I really was, and I can't go back to that.

    2) With it being a Monday and Tuesday day time, they are the quietest shifts of the week. We get a little bit of a lunch rush, but that's it. They also have very realiable staff working these shifts, as they have similar availability to mine. So you don't have people calling in sick every five minutes. Well, you do, but they are for the evening shift. Not my problem.

    3) With fewer customers, you get fewer SC's. Although you do get some crazies that slip the net.

    4) It is never boring. As much as I love my desk job, it can get a bit lonely being sat behind a desk by yourself for hours on end.

    5) The managers aren't bothering me. They know I have other employment, and I cannot work anything else, so they don't even bother asking me for favours, because they know what the answer will be.

    6) Weekly pay. The school pays monthly, and the last week of the month is always hell. Now I have money going into my account every week, which is nice.

So that is my time at the pub. I can tell that things haven't changed at all since I have been gone, but seeing as I don't work any key shifts, I don't notice it.

I understand why you had to make this choice, but I just remember all the times you've came back to the pub, and I really just hope that they don't try to wiggle you into full time again, try to call you in for shifts all the time, and treat you the way they used to. That place is toxic.

Just to clarify things, is this another pub you're working in or the same one you walked out on last time?

Ah yes, there is always too much month at the end of the paycheck...

          Thank you for the update!
... I just hope they don't think "ah, but he came back!" and conclude dipshittery from there. Glad you can find something though. Also glad you found an island of stability in a toxic place (I agree with Blas!). You might want to find a different place anyway.

It is the same pub unfortunately. So that makes it depressing because it does highlight two things:
            1. How desperate they are for realiable workers. They will hire back someone who clearly despises the place.
            2. The sad state of the economy in my area. There are no jobs that will take me on when I have so little availability, and do not want to work weekends. Like I said before, I cannot go back to working six or seven days a week, I really believe it would kill me.

It is toxic, I agree. But I have decided to take a comical stance on it all. I am working with the attitude of "Not my problem". The place could catch fire for all I cared, and I still would not help put out the flames.

It seems like you have the right attitude toward that job. I hope things work out for you.

I do have a question, though; have you run into the manager you walked out on, and (if yes), what was his reaction?

I know we all hope this works out for you.

Agreed, did your leaving force _any_ sort of change in management? Wait, this is CS. How dumb is that question?

Well, he was actually very, very nice to me. I was actually very startled because he engaged me in very friendly conversation.

When I walked out, he used to be a snivelling little brown noser, but also did very little work. Apparently he has been burned in a similar fashion to what I was, and now understands why I did it.

It sounds like you have the right attitude about this job now. Hopefully that carries you for as long as you need to work there.
