  • These septuagenarians are really feisty

I volunteer at a center for senior citizens. The seniors mostly socialise, but there are computers with internet access as well. They use them mostly to exchance emails with their family and to surf the web.
Lately we had a problem with trojans and browser highjacking etc. And we found lots of links to porn sites in the browser histories. We all know by now the internet is for cat content and for porn, infected computers are not funny, though.

The firewall in the router/modem didn't offer any protection, so we decided to switch to IPfire (www.ipfire.org), it's easy to configure and to maintain. Easy enough for the other volunteers and employees to work with when I'm not around. It works in transparent mode, so there's no need for client configuration and people with their own tablets etc. can't circumvent it. No problems so far, it's up and running for about a week now.

Today I was around to help beginners, only to be greeted by a very angry septuagenarian, complaining bitterly that he couldn't see "his" girls anymore. Looks like we've found our culprit. He got told in clear words that porn surfing is not allowed (and impossible now). WOW, I didn't know that 70-year olds can pout like 3-year olds.

Shoot, tell him to get a smartphone, since it seems every other website has a mobi version/app, I would wager than porn sites would too.

No, he's too cheap to do that, and he considers smartphones evil.

The volunteer coordinator told me today that he had complained to her as well, he's still pouting.

Well, then he can go hang out at the local adult video place, assuming there's one with a viewing room....

But then they'd have to deal with his complaints of, "back in MY day, we only had to pay a nickel to see the money shots! You know... ankles!"

Nonono he'll have to pay... he's way too cheap for that.

Of course the gossip in the center has now a new juicy topic!

And he's banned! I just got a phone call about it, my fellow volunteer just had to share to story.

So, today he tried again to surf to "his" girls and failed again.
And he got angry, oh so angry... and tried to trow the monitor onto floor. Well, emphasis on tried, he hasn't got the strength for it. So he got even angrier, the target of his anger was now the volunteer. The combatants: Senior - small, thin, almost frail old man vs. Volunteer - 30 year old with martial arts and boxing as a hobby. The other seniors had already retreated amd watched from the door. The result was somewhat predictable, the volunteer simply blocked everything the senior tried. After the old guy couldn't go on, the volunteer told him to pack his stuff and never come back. Now the 70+ year old morphed into a 3 year old, he sat on the floor and refused to leave. The laughter of the other seniors didn't help to defuse the situation.
In the end they had to call the police...

Not as far as I can tell . . . . those are basic feature phones that offer phone calls and texting only. They do have camera features as well for taking photos and texting them via SMS so that may be the only way he'd be able to get his rockspebbles off.

Oh boy, they sure can. There's one guy who calls in at nights mostly and complains because he can't see MILFS Does Dallas or whatever 5-6 hour session of porn he wants to watch.

He likes to complain about the quality of the movie and that its hard to see and demands a refund. He does this with enough frequency that management refuses to give him credits until he gets a tech out there. *I* got him to stop talking to me by saying I'd refund his money--- and I canceled the PPV to boot. So, sure, he didn't pay for it, but he didn't get to see it either.

Now if he hears my name at the intro, he hangs up and calls back.

How long have you worked with the public? They can and they do. Nothing quite like seeing a 70-year-old pitch a conniption fit over a three-cent difference in what the sign said and what the item rung up as.

That is a fair point, to be sure.

I've had (and still have) many elderly customers. Most are good, but the bad ones...yikes. Some folks never outgrow the bullying or tantrum-throwing stages, sadly.
