  • got a question for the gurus

my friend picked up a vundo bug, im not sure which version. but it is killing the task bar on startup. and shes having trouble getting the start menu to work, when shes able to hit the start button before the task bar goes away. i havent had a chance to touch the machine yet so i dont have much in the way of details, but thought i would check with the l337 people here for any advice going into this. shes running xp pro sp2 (i think) with avg 8.x and spybot teatimer. states that the issue started while surfing deviant art. browser is ie6 sp2

First thing to suggest is get her off IE 6 NOW. If she has to stick with IE, get the beta for 8. It's almost secure. Second would be to start it in safe mode, and use an AV scanner off a USB stick, so you're sure it's not compromised. There's a few decent ones out there, but someone may be able to suggest one for that specific issue.

From here, Malwarebytes seemed to do the trick.

As Broomjockey said though, best run from an external source in safe mode

        I prefer SpyZooka. www.spyzooka.com
They have a 100% removal guarantee, will immunize against future infections, employs a robot to go to millions of sites looking for new spyware threats, updates daily, and is really easy to use.

          uggh

so i got to sit down and look at it, turns out its not a virus. at least not one that the kapersky(sp) rescue disk could find. repair install of windows failed. so now im going over tonite with a spare hdd and gonna try ::knock wood:: to recover data from the partition and wipe and reinstall from scratch.
