  • RAAAAGE~!

I need to vent, so much right now, enough so that my roomie just snarked at me for shouting...

I get a call from work yesterday, another manager asking me to come in today an hour earlier than scheduled 'cause she's gonna hit her 40 hour limit a bit earlier than expected... so I said sure, but I'm pretty close to 40 myself, and I think that'd get me to 40 IF we get out on time... but, no problem as far as I can see otherwise.

So, I get another call just now saying can I come in any earlier, as the manager that's on now can only stay another 40 minutes, and that would leave no front manager for (gasp!) 25 minutes if I don't come in earlier. I tell her maybe, but can someone check my hours to see if I can, as I think I can't but maybe I'm wrong.

Then she tells me "Oh, by the way, <really awesome employee who was just wonderful and fast and nice and good at what she does> quit!" Lightbulb. My reply, "Wait, did Store Manager piss her off again?" Yep. Sure did. Grrr... she's chasing away all the good employees!

Thennn she tells me "Oh, and you'll be by yourself on the front until seven, as no one ever replaced the person's shift that quit last week." WHAT? On a SATURDAY!?!" I spout off a few annoyed words at that, the manager on the phone agreeing with me in a "I know exactly how you feel but I can't say it out loud right here" tone.

So, I ask "Please tell me I at least have two people closing with me up front tonight." and get "I think so, you have <this person> and <that person> but they won't be in til seven, so you'll have a few hours by yourself up front." ON A SATURDAY. IN AN ENTERTAINMENT STORE!!

I spit out a few more choice words, and I hear muffled in the background, <uberawesome assistant manager> say, "Is she complaining again? She can just stop..."

I say "Is that <uberawesome AM> telling me to not complain? I have every right and inclination to complain!" as the manager on the phone tells me "Yup!"

Sorry, I understand <uberawesome AM> is getting frustrated and upset with everything and doesn't need more people complaining, or ME complaining yet again, but if I don't I'll explode. We've had ... one person fired (manager), five quit (one of them being a manager), two more put in two weeks' notice and another manager in the process of being hired elsewhere and will quit as soon as it's done.

We were at bare bones staffing two weeks ago. We have, not including Store Manager and <uberawesome AM>, three front managers (four if you count me, and one manager who only works two nights a week at BEST), a shipment/receiving manager, and a department manager (two if you count the one on her way out)... and THAT'S IT! NOBODY is able to cover shifts if someone gets sick. I've gotten sick once already and HAD to work. Our head front manager has gotten sick TWICE (once, I covered as I had the hours to spare), one being yesterday and I could NOT cover as I had max hours this week. She had to work with a migraine. *shudder*

On top of that, we keep getting saddled with more and more work to do, less people and time to do it in. It used to be two/three people on busiest days up front plus manager, closed and clocked out by 12:30 am. Now it's, most times, ONE person up front plus manager, closed and clocked out by 12 midnight. And oh by the way we HAVE to get all these things done every day too.

For example, the other day our REGIONAL manager stopped in unannounce (I didn't even know he was there until the next day) and saw the state of the store, and the VERY LONG LINES... I was clocked out for lunch, and we had a grand total of THREE people working at the time, one on register and two on the floor. I was doing the best I could to help out and page assistance to register when I could, watching cameras, etc, while on lunch. (Being careful to NOT actually work, but still try to be helpful.)

I had, at one point, ALL THREE PEOPLE on register. Which left NOONE on the floor. The lines were still long... it was BUSY! We beat our sales goals that night!

However, the RM still complained to the Store Manager, (mainly that the lines were too long) and got me in trouble...

WHAT THE HECK?! Am I supposed to pull associate clones out of my butt?!?

Not to mention that most nights we go over our "you have to be out of the store by this time" deadline. And dont' get everything done. And bust our butts and sweat and run around like mad to get what we DO get done, done. And still get threatened to be fired (mostly me, cause it's all my fault as I'm in charge) at least once a week.

I'm getting SO VERY frustrated with this.

    And ranty. Obviously.

Thanks for reading, and bear with me, I'll probably add more to update this, as it's been getting worse and worse and probably will only get even worse.

The <uberawesome AM> says to just stick with it and ignore things and do my best, and I know he's taking some heat off us onto himself, but it's hard to sometimes.

Anyway. Just got another call to go ahead and go in asap. Probably will have updates later, as I bet 'fun' things will happen tonight. <Uberawesome AM> told me the projectile has hit the proverbial fan.

On a funny note - one of our kitties was being noisy and meowling at me for attention the whole time I was talking, and <UAM> said "What the heck is that in the background?? Do you have your other half tied up or something? Oh, I see, it's FUN time over there!> *snerk* He cracks me up sometimes.

    Wish me luck.

Sounds like they're hinting for you guys to do the bulk of your work off-the-clock! Sorry, it must be really rough on you and yes, is not fair. I hope you're rewarded with over/double time for this.

We were told that we need to start getting out a half hour earlier and one "extra" person would be scheduled for this.

This "extra" person would be a closing cashier as we only had ONE service desk person from 6 to closing. Well that didn't work because we NEED that closing cashier because we are busy at night.

This "extra" cashier was supposed help us get out early by doing go backs and helping to recover the floor but instead spend most of the night on the register.

Sometimes I am the closing manager and I was told by the store manager that I am getting out too late.

She does not think about the fact that it is back to school shopping time or we are exceeding a our sales goals and the floor is a mess because of it.

        A bit of an update...

Remember the manager that works two days at best? He was supposed to close tonight. He came in a couple hours early telling me he's probably going to quit. Spent about 45 minutes in the office with UAM, and when they came out, UAM told me he's "calling off sick" tonight and I'm getting a replacement in. Evidently they came to some sort of agreement. I'll find out more tomorrow, as same manager's my midshift cashier, a bit later than normal too.

UAM told me, when I gave him a look about the calling off sick, that he's doing his best to save as many people as he can, and he will probably be sitting down with our District and Regional Managers sometime this week. He also said that from what he has to say he'll probably lose his job, but I really hope not. At this point, UAM is the saving grace of this place.

Though, from what a few of us think, if he does sit down with the DM and RM, they'll probably want to talk to at least the managers that are left, if not all the employees left. :S I'm afraid I'll either not be able to think of anything that I need to say or not stop talking about too many things that need to be said.

Again, I'll probably have more to update on this... supposedly UAM's covering tomorrow's morning shift for the girl that quit and the Store Manager's gonna be in tomorrow morning as well.. although she never is on Sundays, even if it's said she will be... we'll see. And the rest of us in the morning who are opening besides those two all closed tonight too. Yay for an entire staff of tired people!

Two notes in addition for tonight -

Bad note - I had a lady yell at me for giving her the wrong rental game because I was "too busy worrying about what I'm doing tomorrow to care about helping customers". In reality, what happened was I mistook one game for another that was VERY VERY similarly titled, and that was BEFORE I asked UAM what time he wanted me to be in to open in the morning, 8 or 10, which was a very important question. I had apologized to the lady for my mistake but she was adamant it was my attitude that was the problem...

Good note - Had another customer leave a positive comment card about the store and staff... he commented that he saw we were very short handed, but still worked well together and helped people well and handled what we could, and we found what he wanted for him. Hopefully that'll put Store Manager in a good mood in the morning, should she show up.

I don't understand continually cutting back staffing levels, way below the skeleton crew level.

If you want to make money, you have to be able to provide the products and do so in a timely manner. I've walked out of stores before because the staffing levels are so utterly horrendous that I'd be waiting in line for an hour. I don't mind waiting in line, but so long as the lines are reasonable with regards to the purchase I'm going to make. I'll wait in line longer for a big ticket item than for a small item, but if the line is caused by a store obviously being horribly understaffed rather than any legitimate reason, I'll just go elsewhere. I'll put my items back on the shelf and walk out the door.

No staff means fewer sales. When people WANT to give you money, but you won't let them because you want to save money on payroll...I just don't get it!

Its not like its impossible to hire people either. There are a very large number of people disparately looking for work, but they simply want to be stingy with the payroll budget, so then refuse to hire anyone. And then everything goes to hell and income from customers decline because things have gone to hell.

            Exactly.

I think, with all the people we've lost, we've hired ONE new person.

And, what I keep hearing as official 'way we do things' whenever I mention needing more people or an extra half hour... "What are sales at? If we've made enough money today we'll see what we can squeeze in."

Spend money to make money, not the other way around, or the ship will sink faster than it is, grrr.

*sigh* This seems to be operation normal at *big box retail* too. Typical Sat/Sun afternoon would have all 23 registers open plus self check-outs. Now we'll be down 8-10 registers with no cashiers to open them. I'll see CSMs and Managers on register, which almost never happens. Now I see it every single weekend. There simply aren't enough cashiers working, because corporate is cutting back labor. Which means lines are long and customers are frustrated. There's nobody to call for price checks either, because floor people were called up and are currently working register. This seems to be the new "operation normal".

And with the short staffing, Corporate wonders why customer service scores suck. Gee, could it be that there isn't anyone to provide said customer service?

                  Yup. That seems about right.

Another Update... UAM has said that he is probably quitting as well but is going to talk with his wife first.

I told him he's the last stand of sanity in the place, but I understand if he decides to. But it would suck.

                  Tired, might add more later.

With everyone and their cousin looking for a job? Hire more people. Which'll make the store worse and worse as they get entirely new staff who don't know anything.

No ... HQ will never see that a store is short staffed. At a Xmas party, we had senior board members fly in from TX to Calgary, they told us, They care of the lowest ranked minion.

No you people do not. We were under staffed, management is idiots with IQ 10 or less, our software does not work, our internet access is stolen from the neighbors (and it down about 25% of the time), our printers have major issues.

Plus the Manager's son used my computer to surf for lesbian porn and to play a MMORPG, and I get blamed!

And that is just short version of my issues with that place. Why is that people earning mininum wage cannot afford missiles and nukes ?

ShadedWings, last I heard, my 6'5" 300lb ex bf lived in Odessa. If you'd like, I could drop him an email and ask him to pay a visit to your Store Manager. In real life, he (probably) would not (intentionally) hurt a fly, but he sure does not look it! He spent 18 years in the Army, so he certainly knows how...and he can be very...er...persuasive...

Hehehe No thanks, but that's interesting in itself. Most people go "Odessa.. what's that?"

Small update - UAM -DID- quit. Walked in, handed resignation note to Store Manager and all his stuff and said "Nice working with ya..." Such a lie, but ah well.

Most of the staff who didn't know about it beforehand are like .

Store Manager ended up not reacting to it really as apparently she's been having stress related health issues. Almost-heart attacks, etc. Had to go to a doc's appointment same day, so refused to get upset about it. I assume she probably got a bit worked up after the appointment though.

And she told me that she's already transferring someone in from another store, someone she hired/trained and knows will work well (question is, her version of work well or ours? ). Thing is, this person started to be transferred in last week? Before UAM even had decided to quit? I'm wondering if she was transferring her in for a general management spot or planning to get rid of UAM anyway... the plot thickens.

Tired though. Day off today! Spent all my shift yesterday training a new hire. (We actually got one! )

                              More later!
