Heading into the end of the year, We reviewed our IT budget and discovered enough extra cash to accomplish a task we wanted to do for years. Upgrade our printers. We had a variety of B&W laser printers(age, model, mfgr, condition), ink jet printers and several new color copiers/printers/scanners. We discovered we could get rid of all the ink jets and replace many of the old B&W printers with new laser printers.
We got the Adm. Assts and managers together to determine printing needs and set off to create a plan. Myself, network guy and help desk guy were taking in hallway about some of the changes we recently made to our draft plan. In particular we were discussing the fact the some staff had their own ink jet, then 10 feet away another ink jet at the next desk and a under utilized thousand dollar printer sitting ide most of the time.
Well, that was Friday AM. By Friday afternoon I had about 40 frantic emails/voice mails from users demanding to know why IT was taking their printers. Network guy and HD guy we all in similar situations. Seems someone overheard us, told someone else part of what they heard, who told someone else...
We decided to kill the rumor and send a company wide email explain that yes, we will make changes to printing to save costs, what they are we don't know yet. Calm down. Well that didn't work as I got about 40 new emails just begging for me to give them a hint. I did a copy-and-paste reply to all of them, logged off for the day (hey, it was 4:54) and went home. I really am afraid to read my email Monday.
