  • *awkward silence time*

Guy: "Yeah, can you look up a book. Guy by the name of Norman....*pause*"
    Me: *awkward silence*....and?
    Guy: "Norman."
    Me: First name? Title?
    Guy: *silence* "Norman."
    Me: Last name? First name?
Guy: "Hunters of Gor. He wrote that."

I'm not sure if he was embarrassed in mentioning that series, or was just plain brain dead.

Yeah, I'ld be embarrased by wanting anything in that series, too. Even if I was brain dead.

Although I'm fairly well read, Hunters of Gor doesn't even sound familiar. What's it about? Why be embarrassed about it?

Check out the plot lines section.....now I am not ashamed to say I have read some of these, but it definitely is not 'literature' in any sense of the word. The overriding theme and style is fairly typical for fantasy fiction during the time period when the series started.

          Gor!

Phwoar! Nearly an adolescent male's dream SF... Until in one of the books it mentions that the unit of measurement is equivalent to about 4 inches, and in another book it starts drooling on about how our captured heroine's doodahs measure a pert bouncy but firm 7 units... Which, even if "about 4 inches" is rounded down from 4.49, means that our concupiscent sex-bomb has a chest measurement of 31 and a half inches...

Because it's appalling. Basically, it's an entire series of the masturbation fantasies of a one-trick mysogynist who never seemed to really get over the idea that mommy sleeps with daddy and who never really seemed to progress sexually past the age of about 14.

Basically, it's an entire bookcase of books revolving around the idea that all women are hot, willing babes that really want to be forcibly raped.

              No, I'm not joking.

It would be less embarassing to just buy porn. Seriously.

I just did a quick google search which came up witht he amazon page

My advice through, if you're embarressed about a book... find an ebook of it... lots of books are now sold as ebooks and can be downloaded via the Sony Reader or Amazon Kindle (small electronic book with store functionalities, only in the US) (Or even order the real book online from Amazon or eBay)

                Me: Last name? First name?
Side note. I'm sure there are hundreds of authors with that surname...

If you're into BDSM, then the Gor series is probably right up your alley. If not, then I suggest you steer well clear of it.

And to those who say it's an adolescent boy's fantasy come true, well, yes. But, I know some women who are huge Gor fans, so let's just remember it takes all kinds.

Through the library website you can download books. I read the first 3 Tarzan books that way. Hunters of Gor might be free through the library.

I'm always getting guys asking for "Pimp" by Iceberg Slim. And nuts, isn't it sad that all our copies are missing? The funny thing is the guys who come in looking for that book never check out any other book. Anyway, people have to request it by interlibrary loan (where another library system with the book loans it to them).

Oh, and guys come in and ask to look at the Playboy. We keep a copy in the manager's office.
Time! Time! Time is what turns kittens into cats.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

                    I wish porn had subtitles.

Meh. The Gor books are the reading equivalent of those Harliquin 'romance' novels, but for guys. I've never found either group worth reading, but some do like them. There's better fantasy novels out there with romantic plotlines that fit more into my (admittedly idealistic) view of how to treat a woman without having to tie her down.

At least the guy is reading. *shrug* I'd rather people read text porn than park their rear end in front of the TV and watch American Idol.

But I can relate to being embarrassed at the library. I feel silly when I take out Tamora Pierce books from the Teens section I keep feeling like I have to explain that I started reading them in fifth grade so I really have to keep going but I DO read grownup books too sometimes...
