I thought this would be the place to put this. I'll be adding on as I go, because this is going to be lengthy. Mods, if there's any issues, please let me know and if this needs to be moved, please do so. I'm also keeping this as obfuscated as possible, to avoid anyone from where I work finding it.
Hi all! It's been a long time...between family and work, I've been forced to be mostly a lurker. I figure it's beyond time I participated, and I need to vent a bit.
Part 1 - Background
March of last year, I graduated with my Bachelor's in ITS. At the time, I had 2 jobs - student tutor at my college, and an overseer of a community center for a small village providing computers and Internet access for people in the community. Graduating from college meant the tutoring job went away, and the community center job was ending at the end of June - that's when the contract would end.
Yes, I was under contract. It was so limiting - it controlled how many hours I could work, and when and what times the center could be open. That, and the village not finding another person to run it, finally made them close it down late last year. Anyway, I did make a promise that I'd never get in that type of situation again.
I figured I had a few months of looking for employment, which, being in the Thumb State, was going to be difficult. With the college's help, I was hoping to find something...when I recieved an e-mail from one of my old college professors. He was the head if IT for one of the well-off public schools in the state, and essentially asked me if I was interested in a job working "37-40 hours" at the school. I couldn't wait to start - just excited that I had a job after school, and I knew my new boss well. I've also spent half my working life in education - working at a University in the Thumb State in a city that was one of the top 2 leading cities of homicides (and it's not Detroit) for 6+ years, my student tutoring for 2 1/2, and now a public school.
I started the last 2 weeks of June, which were great - I spent them helping strengthen their wireless network in their buildings, and finding out the details of the job. The school was entering a contract between them and 2 other schools - at the beginning of July, I'd be at, let's call it 'S' school, and would handle the day-to-day operations, keeping computers and the network going and sending updates to my boss (OTD - Old Tech Director, for reasons that I'll get to later). He'd stop by once a week to take care of the financials and other paperwork, and meeting with me to start implementing changes.
It sounded great - I'd essentially be in charge of a whole school district's network, with someone who I could learn a lot from. If I only knew what I'd be getting into...
Part 2 coming tomorrow!
