Yeah, I think you did just fine. She specifically asked you for a specific amount. It's not your fault she changed her mind. I think she got mad because she had to deal with the consequences of her lack of fore-thought. Good for you for calling the cops and dealing with it the way you did.

Quoth Nekojin View PostLet's see. A $50 bill, requesting a $10 gift card and a $20 gift card, then "changes her mind" at the last minute to make the $20 gift card a $15 gift card.
Doesn't this ring, "SCAM!" alarm bells to anyone else? It sounds very much like a high-tech version of the money-shifting grift.
Oh, yeah, when I first read this, I was thinking about that.Time! Time! Time is what turns kittens into cats.

My first thought on the amount change was "scam."
However, I do have to wonder. If you make the card for $20, but she only wants it for $15, couldn't you charge for the original $20 and then do a charge against the card for $5, making it so that the customer has a $15 gift card when all is said and done?
I don't know the laws in Minnesota, but in California (and some other states), you are required to cash out gift cards if the customer wants.

As usual, I'm on the employee's side.
Does the system suck? Sure it does. But you know what? That's no fault of csever's. What would I do if I was in the SC's position? Suck it up and pay the freakin' five dollars. It's not like it's a big deal.
Good for you for handling it as well as you could and for calling the cops. Excellent work.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: There's no reason to ever be even slightly douchebaggish to some poor retail employee, unless they were rude to you first. Csever handled it well, and the SC was a total SC. Shame on her for being an unreasonable jerk. And, you know, a freaking nutjob too. Put on some clothes, lady.

I am going to say suck on both sides. Suck on your seide, because of how the system was. Suck on the SC's side, because of what she said at the end. If I was the customer, I would have walked out.

If someone comes up to me and tells me clearly what they want I get it for them. I guess the only thing I would've done differently is change it and hope somebody wanted to buy a $20 gift card that day. Although, if it was 6am, I'd have to say I'd do the exact same thing as you, but probably with more cuss words.

Are you allowed to get payment before you activate the GC's? That would make it a lot easier - you would have the money and she would not have been able to create such a fiasco for everyone.
Also, are you allowed to use GC's to buy GC's? If so, she could have used the original ones to purchase the other ones - no money lost.
Personally, I think she was either someone with a real mental problem, or a scammer trying to look crazy to get her way. She tries the scam, cops come, she looks like she is not fully aware and so instead of getting arrested, they talk to her and let her go.

Quoth chinashirtgirl View PostIs it possible to wait with activating the cards till after you've got the money? There was a story posted here about a guy who stole some gift cards but the joke was on him because they weren't activated yet.
I can't speak for other stores, but here locally, at the K-marts and Wal-marts, the only way to get the total for the order is to scan the card to activate and key in the amount asked for on the card (essentially making the card now valid with XX amount of dollars), repeat for each card on the order. I can see how the OP could have asked for the $30 first, but the total most likely wouldn't show on the customer screen if her system is like those here locally. Then you get SC's who get p***y because you've asked for the money before you actually performed the transaction.
