  • Help me figure out this poem...

    ..and i'll love you forever!

    So, many years ago, i came across a poem online that supposedly is an older, well known one. It was a poem about death, but in terms of the sea and maybe a bell ringing. I was thinking it was by Robert Frost but I've found nothing by him that is like that.

    Yeah, vague I know. Recently, Ive been trying to find it but have come up with nothing.

    Halp? Plz?

    Was it Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe?

    ETA: Or The Bells, also by Poe?

    Or some combination of the two in your head..just like it was for me? (I guess the "bel" in "Annabel" fooled me)

        I wonder if you might be thinking of 'Crossing the Bar' by Alfred Lord Tennyson?

        Sunset and evening star,
        And one clear call for me!
        And may there be no moaning of the bar,
        When I put out to sea,

        But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
        Too full for sound and foam,
        When that which drew from out the boundless deep
        Turns again home.

        Twilight and evening bell,
        And after that the dark!
        And may there be no sadness of farewell,
        When I embark;

        For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
        The flood may bear me far,
        I hope to see my Pilot face to face
        When I have crost the bar.

            That felt like The Dating Game. What's my consolation prize?

              You're welcome

              That poem was read out at the funeral of our local vicar last year, and it's strange but as soon as I saw your description I was just sure that was the one you meant. Glad to have helped, Amina.

                  This is the one I thought of.

                  John Donne, part of Meditation 17. "No man is an island."

                  No man is an island, entire of itself;
                  every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
                  if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less,
                  as well as if a promontory were,
                  as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were;

                  any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind,
                  and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
                  Seshat's self-help guide:
                  1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
                  2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
                  3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
                  4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

                  "All I want is a pretty girl, a decent meal, and the right to shoot lightning at fools." - Anders, Dragon Age.

                    That's so pretty, Seshat. Thank you.

                    Funny how many fit into that description. I wonder how many more are out there.

                        this was always one of my favorites
                        Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

                          It's a wonderful piece, isn't it?
