I got this one working on a (much) older computer replacing the CD/DVD drive:

"WARNING: CD-ROM speed detected faster than possible."

Had me talking in my fake-Scotty voice for hours.

You never know what is truly possible...After all (speaking of Scotty), transparent aluminum exists now. Apparently, it's stronger than silica-based glass, and can be used in similar ways. Granted, it costs around ten bucks per square inch...

I remember those stupid things. Mom's boss at the time thought it was the greatest thing ever and she wanted me to set it up and support it for her.

I say this about current QR codes on packaging too.

I'm pretty sure this episode of Haruhi Suzumiya referenced Scotty's computer skills. As well as quite a few other things.

YES!!! I have been waiting years for that to be invented.

5 more years and I might be seeing it at the machine shop I work at. I wonder how well it will cut, material density, special requirements, what type of parts will be made, ect.

(dang nab it, I just had a nerdgasim )

People have been working on it (read: first patent) since at least 1980, and it was in usable, testable form as of 15 years ago. With any luck, ALON (Aluminium oxynitride) could be something offered to the public in a few years. Who knows? (It's technically a form of ceramic, but it contains a fair amount of aluminum. I'd say that's "close enough" )
