  • maybe cw should not leave their charger out

Today, Tues. June 21, a patron came up to me asking to use a phone when I was at the WD at 2:45. I said we had no public phone, closest one was by Popeye’s (etc). She came back and asked if there might be a charger she can use. I know I see chargers left on reference desks a few times, so I decided to look at the desk to see if any was left behind.

I look in the drawers and I see a charger attached to our plug, though there was no phone attached to it. I imagined a co-worker used the charger for their phone but didn’t take the charger. We checked and it fit the patron’s I-phone. I let her use it. I guess I should have asked her what she needed to call for since all her calls (many) were to different institutions trying to find volunteering opportunities.

So she is on her phone a lot by my desk, so I thought the best thing to do was let her take the charger to the World Language area, if she promise to bring it back.

I went to the WL area to make sure there was available plugs, then when I came back to the WD, I see Shelly, the security guard, talking to the woman. It was Shelly’s charger. The patron asked if she could borrow the charger and Shelly said yes, though Shelly didn’t seem happy about it.

So L came to replace me at 3 and I told her what was going on. I was becoming uncomfortable with the situation, since the patron was by the WD (and the cord was too short to let her stand) and now I can’t have her go somewhere else unless I asked Shelly if the patron can take the charger somewhere else.

I really don't know if Shelly (the cw in the story, though she is contracted to work here, not really a cw) will be pissed at me. Also, my boss came by to log out from work on the computer at the desk; she didn't ask what was going on but still I emailed her the details.

This is why I have my name written all over my work charger.

At the motel, we have about three boxes FULL of chargers people have left behind.

Since I have to regularly stay there, and because I either (1) frequently leave my charger at home or (2) if I bring it I end up leaving it at the motel, I just started keeping a charger at home and a charger at work. The work charger is in a drawer separate from the motel's "collection", and has my name written all over it, so there should be no confusion about it. And if when I leave it in the room, Housekeeping will see that it's mine and return it accordingly.

I would never just let a patron use something that is one of my coworkers' personal property... I mean, if the patron wanted part of their lunch, would you just hand it over?

I don't think OP knew the charger belonged to her CW at the time she told the customer she could use it.

Well, cellphone chargers aren't a service libraries usually provide. Common sense would dictate it belonged to somebody... unless the desk is a catch-all lost-and-found as well.

Yes, the Welcome Desk is an unofficial lost and found. The guard sits at the desk and if anything is turned in he/she will take it down to the real lost and found. So stuff might sit there for an hour-or more. My idea was just to find a lost charger, but really, I should have just thought "that one plugged in is most likely one that belongs to a cw." Bad idea to let the woman borrow it even though I wanted to be helpful.

Hmm... you know maybe the electronics stores should start doing what Japan does... You can rent charger/lockers. You pay for the time, put your phone in the locker and take your key. Then you come pick it up after your time is up.

granted you can't call while it's being charged but... o well, not anyone else's problem.
