My best friend went into the hospital last Friday, she's still there. At first it looked like kidney stones, but when they looked for kidney stones they couldn't find any. The contact didn't show any. In fact the contact agent didn't go into her kidney, which pointed to a blockage cause all you have to do is fill her bladder and she refluxes all the way to her kidneys. So the next day they go in and they don't find anything. So they're calling in neurologists. Meanwhile her urine output has significantly decreased and she can't think and can barely stay awake.
    I'm really worried about her.

      Hmm. This is concerning.

Do you mean CONTRAST agent? The dye for the Renal CT? If that is not going into the kidney, that points to a vascular problem of some sort. Have they consulted with a nephrologist (specialist in the kidney)?

It sounds to me like she is going into renal failure, which would explain the mental status changes.

Is she swelling in the legs? How's her blood pressure?

I'm thinking Acute Tubular Necrosis, in which the tubules (a structure in the kidneys) become necrotic and slough up the kidney. The initial symptoms can mimic a kidney stone.

Fortunately, in most adults, it will often resolve without permanent damage to the kidney. In some people it will lead to chronic renal failure though.

in which case a hospital is the best place to be. Near a dialysis machine. ._____.
Best wishes for your bestie, akasa.
EDIT: why wouldn't she be awake and aware, Panacea?

The kidneys produce a hormone (erythopoeitin) that helps the body make new red blood cells. Without it, old RBCs are not replaced, and the person becomes anemic. The reduced oxygen carrying capacity affects perfusion of the brain, resulting in memory loss and fatigue.

Also, renal failure can affect the body's acid base balance (the kidneys control base), resulting in metabolic acidiosis which also affects how the brain works and is oxygenated.

She was awake and aware yesterday when I was up at the hospital. They're still unsure of what's going on, and yes contrast agent.

Well they've released her from the hospital. That's all I know at this point. I know the neurologist said it wasn't her MS, and they were hoping it was last I heard. So I dunno why she was released. Last I heard she was still having pain like she was in labor.

I don't know what's going on. I just know I have a low regard for the hospital she was in. They had told her that her neurologist wasn't with the hospital, then low and behold here he comes waltzing in. Yeah. He's going to be taking some legal action against the hospital for telling his patient he's not with the hospital when his office is attached to the building. It's been things like that with this hospital that make me say I'm going to one of the other hospitals if I get hospitalized here.

                      Yay! Friend is released.
Boo! Friend is still in pain. Give her hugs from a strange internet girl. If she wants them. Pain kinda puts a crimp on that.

Have her go to another hospital and get a second opinion if the pain does not go away.

Didn't you say she had a kidney stone? The pain is said to be similar to labor pains (though I've had kidney stones, I've never been in labor, so I can't really say).

They're basically saying she passed a large kidney stone and the pain is lingering from that. She is agreeing with them, so...

Oh fun fact about best friend, she has mega ureters so it was a BIG stone.

                            That sounds plausible.
