How's your friend or have they not seen the specialist yet?

Not after she mentioned she can eat something and 6 hours later throw it back up. Her PCP is like "It should be out of your stomach by then!"

I don't know if she's had her appointment with the specialist yet or not. I'll ask her when I see her Monday.

*Sigh* as if there are not conditions that affect digestive tract motility ... [I took byetta which slowed down my intestinal tract deliberately. Nothing like synthetic gila monster spit as a medication.]

After one operation back in 1996 I actually did have my stomach slow down - it was basically the pyloric sphincter at the bottom of the stomach being sort of paralyzed from the anesthetic temporarily. Very unpleasant for the 20 or so hours it took to 'wake up' and decide to work again. Motility disorders suck.

            An update.

My best friend went in and had the test where they make you eat radioactive eggs then track it through your digestive system for 2 hours Monday. She has yet to have her test results back, but the doctors are all like "Yeah it could be gastroparesis."

Yuck, somehow the term "radioactive eggs" completely wiped out my appetite.

Gastroparesis is easily treatable. I've had it for over 10 years. It's not fun, but it can be managed. Here's hoping that what it is for your friend.

Results are in gastroparesis it is, she's got a endoscopy scheduled to see if they can't do anything about it.

I would be interested to know if they find something they can do for her. I haven't been able to find a doctor anywhere that would do anything other than tell me to "watch what you eat".

However, having said that, there certain foods that seem to make it flare more than others. If she keeps a diary for a while, she should be able to narrow down what foods are not good for her. For me, of course, it's all of my favorites! But I know that going in, and only have them once in a while (like once a year or so) and just deal with it. I have also learned that, when it starts to flare, massaging the right side of my stomach (which is where it connects to the intestine) does seem to help move the food along. She will just have to experiment a little.

There are drugs that can be taken, but they didn't work out for me, mainly because they have to be taken a certain amount of time before you eat. I work in retail, so I don't have a set lunch or dinner time each day.

                      Hope this helps!
