  • Not sucky, but a pet peeve

The title of the book is Diary of a Young Girl. The play is called Diary of Anne Frank. I just had a girl ask for Diary of Anne Frank. I asked her if she wanted the play or the book-book. She said she wanted the book-book.

When I was at a branch, some time ago, a woman did ask a cw for The Diary of Anne Frank. So that was ordered. The woman was angry that she got the play. Really, know what you are asking for, dear library patrons, don't assume we know what you mean.

I didn't know that actually, having read neither of them. I've only heard of the Diary of Anne Frank, and assumed that was what the book was called, as well as the play

I had to read it for middle school, but I didn't remember that the it was called "Diary of a Young Girl."

Why wouldn't the librarian take a moment to confirm something like that, rather than going to the trouble of ordering it, then having to return and reorder it?

I assume this would be a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation. If you do ask you could be yelled at in the form of "Yes, I know what I want, what are you dumb or something?"

And the if you don't should be obvious as the OP already pointed it out.

I find most libraries tend to assume you know what you are asking after.

It is, sometimes the title is alternated with The Diary of Anne Frank. There is a Anne Frank Museum in The Netherlands (Holland) in the area where she and her family hid until the Nazis arrested them. I read that book and man is it sad.

This is something I can sympathize with.
At my work we have three types of "Chillers": chocolate, vanilla and "Icespresso", which is the coffee version that comes from a machine.
9/10 people will NOT specify which one they want and get annoyed when I give them the wrong one (chocolate is the most popular so by default if I forget to ask that's what they get).

It wasn't like the librarian was ordering from the publisher, just requesting a copy from a branch with the copy.

Sorry I didn't give more details (a bitch co-worker came by while I was typing the original post, and she was telling me to put up some books. I rather hate her because she treats me like I'm 12 or something).

When I was in the other branch, we didn't have a copy of The Diary of Anne Frank (which is the play, not the book) since we were a smaller branch than the main library. Now I suppose the librarian who took the request assumed the patron new what she wanted. Though many cases , when it's an adult, he/she could be getting the book for his/her the kid, and when the librarian try to ask if the kid needed the book or the play, the parent said to get what the kid asked for. But let's just say the librarian isn't familiar with the book, or forgot that the play and the book have diff. titles. So the librarian should have typed in the title and would come up with the call # 812 G654, which should red-flag as a play. But maybe the librarian wasn't paying attention. Now the book is known as Anne Frank : the diary of a young girl and The diary of a young girl and either book can have the call #s B F828 and/or 940.531 F. Yeah, confusing.

And honestly, librarians can forget or are swamped and the brain is too overwhelmed to figure things out.

But I was the one who was stuck with the patron who came back and said we got the wrong book for her, since she didn't want the play.

Well, I'd always heard the book as 'Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl', FWIW.

At least I doubt anyone is going to ask for the books The King and I or Bladerunner

                        i remember that title.
and since we're on the subject of Anne Frank, I recommend reading this: Anne Frank's Tales from the Secret Annexe.

It's a book of short stories she wrote. Not as popular as the diary, but it really does showcase her talent and imagination.

I remember when the movie came out there were paperbacks for Bladerunner, with the movie poster with HF and SY on the cover. And it was the text for Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Since people would be more familar with the title of the movie then the book. But now adays a library would have a book with the title Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep than Bladerunner.

Ah, Anne Frank. You live on because a bunch of teachers want you to be read. And maybe because a bunch of neonazis don't abelieve in the holocaust. Hopefully, though, the future will never want another war so there will be no more innocents, like you, Anne, dying for no reason.

Another person comes up asking for Diary of Anne Frank, "...what floor will it be on?" I ask if it's the play or book and she says the book, so here I am about to go to the computer to look up the number and she tells me "the librarian gave me the number." *shows number*. Yeah, I only know how to find books by titles, but call numbers will confuse me Considering stuff is on the shelf by call #.
