  • A new game: Let's see which cards DOESN'T decline...

Lady comes in looking to get a room. Due to excess theft, room damage, and inconsiderate people that smoke in non smoking rooms, we started requiring a credit card, something the hotel next door had been doing for years.

She whips out cash, so I immediately tell her about our credit card requirement policy, so has no issues with it. Pulls out a credit card and I tell her that I need to run it for $100. She says no problem, and even says "its there, I got it". Well the card declines.

When I tell her this, her reaction led me to believe that she knew it would. Its happened before, they hope it goes through, but are not surprised when it doesn't. She just said "Well, thats wierd". She then tosses me another card.

I try it, same thing. Again, she gave me the impression that she knew it would. I tried 4 more cards, thats right, 6 total!!!! And of course, all declined.

So I try to restart the software, thinking there is an issue with it. I try an addition 5 cards, making this a grand total of 11 cards, ALL DECLINED!

She then left, without protest (most people would be yelling at me if there cards declined, she didn't, as I stated, I think she knew this).

I then swipe my card, if this is a software issue, I need to find out. It wasn't, my card went through for $100, twice, no issue with the software at all.

Who wants to bet that she will have credit card #12 soon?

That is truly horrifying. The idea of having 11 maxed out credit cards would be enough to send me into heart failure. I wonder how common that sort of thing really is...

The idea of having even 1 maxed out credit card scares me... I don't understand why people have that many. Talk about living beyond your means.

I wonder how she's going to get out of all that debt. I kind of feel bad for her.

Someone having that many cards on hand would send up an armada of red flags to me, that just screams credit card fraud. There's no way someone would be able to open up that many cards under their name without the CC companies declining them for having too much available credit for their income.

Wow, I've played that game before with customers, but it's usually resolved on the second or third card.

I think you've hit a new record. I'm not even going to hope I beat that score.

My boss currently has 8 cards. That's down from the 13 he had a couple years ago. Three of the providers absorbed three of the others, and he dumped 2 he never used because they didn't give any sort of reward. Half the time his cards are maxed, and they get paid off completely every month.

I've had to cycle cards to make payments for him before. It's a little embarrassing.

Wow, that is utterly ridiculous. I mean, having a couple maxed out credit cards sucks as it is. But 11!? This is why the only card I have is my debit card. Can't spend what I don't have.

I think after declining 11 cards in a row like that, the software should just print out a number to a credit counseling service.

I can't imagine maxing out 11 cards. I get annoyed with myself if my main credit card hits $1000 (I pay EVERYTHING on that, except rent) for the month, and that's only a fraction of the limit I have on it. This girl is probably at least $11,000 in debt on credit cards alone. That just boggles my mind.

11? No, seriously. 11? ELEVEN? When I played that game with an SC, they only made it up to credit card #4...

I don't even want to know how someone could manage to max out 11 cards.

Reminds me of a chum's wife when I was talking to her some time ago. She had a few credit cards, and you know how they keep increasing the limit every so often? She owes nothing on them, but worked out that what she could get would put a pretty sizeable extension on the side of their house and allow her to furnish it rather lavishly.

As for me, I have one credit card. Everything I can make that way, goes on debit card - I like to spend cash, y'know? I always carry some cash. The credit card is for Internet purchases where I can't use my debit card and for emergencies. I always pay it off completely every month.

GOD I hate the "well, that's weird" phrase customers say to me every single time their card is declined.

No, it's not weird, ma'am. It's called you suck at life and suck at managing your money. I'm not going to swipe it again because it won't work no matter what you think.

Oh, I'll bet she's a LOT deeper than that. I know people who's limits are $20,000 or more on a card. Why would anyone want to charge that much? It would be much cheaper, interest-wise, to just get a loan if you need the money.

So, I guess, worst-case scenario, she could be up to a quarter of a million dollars in the hole. Although I really can't concieve that much CC debt. Someone please tell me that's not possible.

I wouldn't put it past her to have over $50k in debt, but I seriously hope that those cards are low limit and that she's at the $11k limit mentioned earlier in the thread.

In all honesty, when she piled up the cards, I was very interesting in seeing if the cards would all decline or not. It was like I was the dealer at a casino, and was playing against one person and they kept losing, and then thought "I wish this person would win, atleast one time".
