  • Did a SCW maybe actually learn?

At my job, the IT dept also is responsible for all AV equipment. We have a list of equipment that employees can sign out for presentations. This list consists of various projectors and some very basic sound systems, mostly portable and table top lecterns with a amplifier/speaker built in. Recently, we got a request to provide sound for special event outside. The wanted a podium, a hand held mic or two, and a mic to pick up a guitar amp and a CD player. This was to be held offsite, outside, with about 200-250 people. Not a easy setup.

A few days before the event SCW (who has signed out our portable lecterns many times before) shows up.

SCW: Hi. I'm here about the <event>.
M: Ok. Let me get <Head AV guy>.

I should note that I usually work with HAV for larger setups like this.

HAV: Hi. What can I help you with?
SCW: I'm here to pick up the sound stuff for <event>
HAV: Um, IT is actually providing the set up and operation for that event. For large events like that a trained professional needs to set-up and operate the equipment.
SCW: Why? I think I could figure it out!
    HAV: You sure?
SCW: Yes I, went to <school> for <degree>! (no relation to any technical field or sound)

I talk with HAV and we decide to escort them to the storage room. Shelves and cases full of expensive pro audio and video gear.

HAV: Ok. What would you get to connect the microphone to the system?

SCW looks around and sees the bin labeled "XLR Microphone cables" and grabs a cable. It is about 10 ft long.

    SCW: This would work.
M: True, however it is way too short. You would need at least 50 feet.
SCW: Well, I know what mic to use. *SCW grabs a mic from the "voice mics" box*
M: Yes, however you would need a wind screen because it us being used outside.
HAV: Now how would you kook it up, not using a podium.
    SCW: Uhhhhhhhhh. I'm not sure.
    HAV: .....
    M: ......
SCW: I guess I'll let you get back to work.

SCW gives HAV the mic and cable and we escort them out and get back to work on our other tasks.

The day of the event arrives and myself, HAV and a CW are unloading all the gear needed, when SCW arrives and sees us unloading a SUV full of gear. After the event is over SCW comes up to the "booth," er, tent.

SCW to HAV: Hey, <HAV> I'm sorry I was such a jerk before. No way could have have got a the right gear and made it work like you did.
    HAV: Don't worry.
