So, it's Wednesday night as I type this...

Monday night, I notice that one of my cats (Charles) is having trouble going to the bathroom. He'd strain and either a little poo or nothing happens. Then he'd jump out of the box and start heaving, coughing up fluid...

Tuesday morning, he's still doing the same. Call vet, they say bring him in. His urinary system is blocked. They say his blood work is OK, an x-ray shows no blockage in his intestines, but they say keep him overnight, they'll give him fluids and check his urinary system out.

Get call while at work, they say there was a mucus build-up that plugged him up, and it was cleared and he had a huge wizz and a big poo and he's better... but they'd like to keep him overnight to watch him.

Wednesday morning, go pick Charles up, the vet says everything is OK. Bring him home. Charles is let out of the box and runs into the basement to hide. Normal behaviour for him, I expected that.

I have three other cats (Oscar, Mambo, and Skittles) and they are all from the same litter. All three of them seem kind of freaked out by Charles' presence. It's like they don't know who he is? They're crowding him, and he's trying to get some but they won't leave him alone.

Also, Charles hasn't tried to eat or drink anything yet, which I kind of expected because of the stressful day and maybe he'd sore or something. But the other three haven't come for food yet either.

I'm hoping tomorrow they'll be hungrier and be able to get some food in them... especially Charles.

He probably has the smell of the vet's office on him. You may not be able to smell it, but the other cats can. The same thing happened when one of my cats got blocked awhile back. The vet had to keep him for several days, and at first we weren't even sure he was going to make it. Luckily, he recovered, but when I first brought him home it was like the other cats forgot who he was. They kept hissing at him for the first day or two.

I had two kittens growing up together (not related) and almost a year latter one kitten had fluid retention and I took him to my job, the cat shelter, for an opinion. He goes to the vet, gets drained, and when I took him home (probably a week away) his friend hisses at him and was hostile toward him. About a month latter I took the cat back to get drained and left him at shelter since I don't know why he was getting fluid retention, and the vets didn't know why, but he seemed better off at the shelter. Something was happening at the house to make him retain fluid. I was trying to sell my house at this time so I figured the cat at the shelter was doing fine. I let him get adopted, and I understand he is fine at his home.

Bingo. This has happened to so many of my cats ... They're best buds, then one has to go to the vet (even if they don't stay for a day or three) and they come back and suddenly it's "INTERLOPER ALERT! INTERLOPER ALERT!!!" and there's hissing and snarling and general pandemonium.

He will shed the vet office smell in a day or two (or perhaps more, if he's a long-haired cat) and things should get back to normal.

Is there any way you can put aside some food/treats and water for him where the others won't get at it? It will give him a chance to get some noms in peace and quiet.

Doing my best to keep him separated from the others. He was starting to behave normally and then went and hid again after giving him the vet-prescribed medication.

The other cats just don't want to eat now... they're not sick but they're stressed now because of this.

          Stupid cute claw-monsters...

EDIT: however, I'm still concerned that he's still trying to go the bathroom and not producing, that I've seen.
