Seriously, this cannot be a brain fart. 5 times in 16 days, each time the same thing, each time through the self-scans.

My only question is why he's only been cautioned when this has happened five times in less than three weeks now.

Sentencing guidlines are pretty strict - if it's his first offence and he admitted guilt under caution (in his interview) then that would be pretty much the only option open to the police, the CPS wouldn't have been interested at all.
