Self Sighting: Lizard doesn't DESERVE wine!
Last night I was having dinner with a friend before doing some Christmas shopping and she was showing me some vacation pictures on her phone when the waitress comes by to ask us how we are with our drinks. (Get ready for the suck!!) I had already decided on a glass of wine so I grab a menu and say "I'd like wine instead of beer this time...." (the menu is pretty limited with wine selection, so I knew it would take about 1 second to remind myself which kind I wanted). That's when I look up and see that she has 2 plates of food that she is obviously on her to way to drop off at another table, which makes me feel like a dick, so I say "Oh, sorry, finish what you were doing, I can wait"
Not too sucky, right? Yeah, well then, for some reason that I can't even fathom, something short circuits in my brain and I make a shoo-ing gesture at her. Like she's my cat trying to rub herself all over my black pants or a possum raiding my garbage cans.
In my defense I was only trying to demonstrate that I had no problem waiting my turn but it just looked so.......patronizing. I swear, I've never made that hand motion at another person in my life and I choose NOW to bust it out?!!??
As soon as she comes back I tell her "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to "shoo" you...." and she is polite and friendly about it but I could tell that underneath she was irritated. Rightfully so.
I'm not sure if I enjoyed a shiraz and spit cocktail but if I had, it was my own darn fault.
Rude *ss-hole, table for one!

Thanks PepperElf.
I was just so annoyed with myself, especially as I have been serving part time along with my other jobs for the past couple of years and I know how much that would have pissed ME off. I seriously have no idea where it came from, except that I was worried her tray would be heavy and I was trying to make a "hurry, before you drop your tray" gesture. But it just smacked of assiness.

Well, sometimes I get irritated, but later I relax when I try to look at it from a different angle. It's hard to do, but possible. Hopefully by the end of the day she thought, "Maybe that customer was concerned about the plate load," and mentally gave you a pass. Possible.

I'd say probable. Demeanor counts for so much IRL, and I'm sure yours was very apologetic, IatLQ.
Hey, at least you didn't whistle or snap your fingers to get her attention to say sorry!

I was a server in a former life and I can tell you that her interpretation of your "shooing" gesture would likely have depended greatly on your facial expression as you made it. There's the expression that says, "I'm holding you up; quick, go get rid of those loaded plates and then I'll put in my order" and there's the expression that says, "Go away, serf; come back when you can focus on only me." I'm betting you were wearing the former expression ...
And if you think she was irritated by what you did, just imagine her reaction (understandably so) if you'd made her stand there with those platters while you went through the process of ordering ...

When in doubt, I think the amount left for a tip should tip her off that you're not a SC.

An apology probably went a looong way. Servers who are shooed do not expect an apology afterwards, so that was probably enough to confirm to her that you weren't "one of them" and it was a genuine mistake.

Thanks guys! I really hope my facial expression was more of a 'Oh my god I just realized you are holding a heavy tray and now I feel like a douchebag" than a "scram you lowly servant!". I just know how annoying it is to be standing with your arms full of heavy, clanky things and have someone pull out a menu and say "Hmmmm...now.......let......me......seeeeeeee..... what do.....I.....want......?"
I left her 20%, if that helps, and we were extremely low maintenance, besides the momentary suck.
I just have to let this stuff go. I know my intentions were 100% honorable, and I apologized. But I can't help looking for a thread in Sucky Customers called "Stupid bitch actually SHOOED me!"
