  • I don't think you know what book you want.

So I started training last Tues. at the bookstore (which involved going through a book in training mode) and worked a register Fri, Sat. and Mon. Mon. I was left alone during lunchtime. I only needed help one time when I was by myself, but sometimes I needed help the other times so I'm ok.

Last time I was a cashier was when I worked at Walgreens sometime like '92-'94. At the library I never was trained on a register.

Behind the counter at the book store, there are Exam books and media that are most likely will get stolen, like books on cd, cds, and dvds/blue rays. In fact, one day a cw got a cd from behind the desk to give to a customer. Customer wanders off or spend times looking at the thing because a few min. latter she walks around the rope blocking the area, and gets behind the counter. A diff. cw tells her, "you can't be back here" and the customer says, "She gave me this." Now, considering the first cw had to go behind the counter to get you an item, and did not tell you to go behind the counter to get the item yourself in the first place, maybe you should get the clue that you are not suppose to be behind the counter.

But my story involve the exam books. The woman training me never showed me the exam books, or where the cds/dvds/blue rays were. Luckily I recognize the exam books from working at the library, and the media items are obvious. Sat. A young woman, college age comes up to me. She was speaking fast (she actually sounded like Stewie from Family Guy). Now I'm used to people speaking fast, so I could understand her until she got really specific. I was understanding she was asking for "the EXIT EC-6 General" So I go to the Exam books trying to find what she is asking for. I go back to her, asking her to write down what she said, and of course she gets an attitude, telling me, "why can't you find it?"

So she writes "EC 6 General". I go back. I see "TExES Core Studies EC 6" and "TExES General." So I take her both books and she gets the one she wants, looks through it to make sure the book I got her is what she wants. Now at my new job we have to push Mastercard onto people. Which sucks but you know how corporations are. Since she looks like a college student, I tell her, "would you like to sign up for The BookStore Mastercard? It's a great way to build your credit." Now I understand people not liking being pushed into signing up for credit cards, so I sort of understand her being brusque (and kind of nasty) but, you know, being an adult means acting like an adult and not like a 12 year old told to eat her veggies. She said, in a very "you suck!" tone of voice, "No, why would I want that, I don't have credit." Also, obviously she didn't here the part about building credit by getting credit cards. But again, I do know people might react negatively. And I'm stuck having to push these things, bleh.

I just love how new jobs toss you in the river and tell you to learn how to swim. Then they get mad at you because you never learned how to swim. Oh yeah, fun times.

So far no one has said, "DMfan, I know you've been working the registers for 3 days now, why can't you remember to hit "total" to see the final discount" (though I have pressed "total" and still didn't see the final discount). So far people are good at helping me when I forgot stuff. And I do write down stuff to remind me. It also helps to write down something to make things more concrete.

But yeah, besides a book on how to ring stuff up, they really need to make a book of stuff a new person needs to know, like what to do with stuff people didn't buy (it goes in a basket by the door), how to ring up a newspaper (I had to ask), what to do when I'm not ringing up anyone (everyone has diff. ways to keep busy; one person dusts, one of the manager shows me how to refill the music kiosk, one person has me wrapping holds in paper). I know I should know the different ways to keep busy. But unless something prompts a cw to show me how to do something (like when someone came up asking for their sunglasses; I didn't know lost and found was at a diff. desk), I won't know it. Also, even though they never had an emergency, I should be shown where is the gathering point for when their is a fire or some emergency. I had to ask. God forbid something happens, but really, I think it's important to know just in case.

In fact, diff. people have diff. ways to ring up stuff I'm trying to keep straight. One person was showing me how to wrap items on hold with a print out with the customer's name on it. One cw wants me to put the date and initial the wrapper, though the person who trained me on how to wrap the item didn't show me that and I don't think she does it that way. Being the paranoid person I am, someone is going to bitch about how I don't do it the way she showed me.

Then there was yesterday when someone called for back up while another cw (beth) was showing me how to put stickers on items on the clearance table. Beth was showing me clearance went to backup, but then a manager saw me and said, "Go do backup," and I wanted to say, "Beth went to do back up," but then I figure the manager think I was back mouthing him, so I didn't say anything and went to back up and I wasn't needed.

Forgive me, but this doesn't sound like a very well organized store. Why are there so many different people showing you things? If you get too confused, go to the manager and learn to do whatever you're confused about how THEY want it done. That said, I'm sure you'll get things figured out there soon. It sounds like you already have started to. As for your SC...well...god help her college professors if she acts like that in class!
