  • Not sure what to believe with this story.

Last night I got a tip from a caller in Texas. She said that one of our guests (even named first name and room number) was involved with human trafficking. I suggested she call the police. She did. She warned me that guy is very good at playing innocent.

Police came by and went up to the guy's room. They were there for about 20 minutes and left.

I really hope I was correct in not getting involved. I checked the guy in personally a couple days ago. My only interaction with him was the checkin. Afterwards there had been no activity from his room.

Unfortunately, in the internet era, plenty of people who have a grudge against "person X" will follow them via social media, and every place they go, they will call management and try to get them chucked/denied service by inventing a phony criminal record.

The only thing that makes me pause and think it may be legit is most of the troublemakers claim the person is a child molester (not that that's BETTER) but are deliberately going for maximum shock and hoping word leaks out and ruins them via reputation....

I agree though, tell the person to call the cops and if the cops show up, there was at least something worth looking into. I'd never take a strangers word alone, because I've seen too many people come after me/my company that way because they're upset they got towed for illegal parking... and next thing you know, the cops are showing up with breathalyzers because they claimed our driver was drunk and weaving all over the road....
    - They say nothing good happens at 2AM, they're right, I happen at 2AM.

The year was 2003 (this is important). Back when I worked in the record section a guy came in demanding to see his child's records because, according to him, his child had been brought to the ER in 2001 with bruises on their legs, and he "just knew" his ex-wife had been beating the child and was an unfit parent. When he was told that he could not see his child's records without written permission from the his ex-wife, who was the custodial parent, he went right over the edge and started shouting that he was going to "get" his ex-wife, and we were going to show him those records if he had to go all the way to the base commander. My boss flew into action at that point. She told him point blank not to dare dragging our section into a custody battle or he'd be in even bigger trouble than he already was, as she had called the base police to have him removed from our office. He then threatened to go into our record storage room and get them for himself, so my boss stationed a big, burly sergeant in front of the door. Right about then the base police showed up and escorted him out of our department with him yelling all the way that he was going to "get" his ex-wife. I don't know what happened after that, but for the rest of the time I worked there I never saw this person again.

If he was active duty, that probably would have been enough for him to have a heart-to-heart with his CO.

As much as anyone would want to help in that situation, I think you did the right thing. The best you can do is keep an eye out for the guy if he ever returns, watch camera feeds (if you have access/ask someone who does) to look for unusual traffic to/from the room -- maybe ask HK to keep an eye out.

Interfering with an investigation, even accidentally, could get the whole thing thrown out even if he IS caught. Leave it to the cops, but be prepared to assist them without the suspect knowing. Call them the second you suspect something is up with this, or any future guest. If he checks in, ask them to send an plainclothes officer who can stake out the hallway.

I think it was less "heart-to-heart" and more of a "come to Jesus" meeting.

I recall reading about a profile of our new breed of domestic terrorist. One of the profile points was that a lot of them had been either denied or kicked out from police or military service.

So does that mean that [whoever] is now going to flag everyone who was ever denied service as a potential terrorist? Because that would include my brother (medical; cracked cornea), who is wrapping up his master's degree as we speak.

I'm pretty sure they're more focused on dishonorable discharges.

At least I hope they are.

And "temperamentally unsuited" denials/training failures. Basically, these are the people who want the power of the uniform, but are sufficiently screwed up that the services won't take them.
