Once she got off the vent last week, she was hypoxic and not quite the same Mom we knew. My sister in law was with her (she would tolerate K for longer periods than she would any of us kids), and she asked for her own mother (who died in 1967), and to go home.
They were talking about possible bypass surgery. But she decided she was done. No surgery, and she didn't want to be intubated again. Besides, her doctor didn't think the surgery would help her breathing and she might end up on a vent permanently.
Besides, open heart surgery on an 80 year old woman with COPD? How, exactly, is that a good idea?
Anyway, she chose to go to hospice. She was in better spirits, upbeat and able to talk to us over the weekend, but it seems that was the surge. She started to go downhill Monday.
My Dad is still in a nursing home and will very likely stay there. He did get to see her over the weekend, so that was something.
