  • Stop it, seriously

I've only been working at the casino for a couple weeks now and god some things are starting to annoy me.

People that stick 20 $1 chips on top of a pile of $5 chips. Just ask for a colour change, it takes seconds, even for us new dealers, and it takes us less time to pay you out if we don't have to offset your tower of chips.

One guy asked for all $5 chips, handed me like $300 or so, and then proceeded to make $25 - $100 bets...seriously, ask for some $25 chips. We only have so many $5 chips in our tray, and $300 eats up a lot of that.

I had one guy tell me that "we know it's not your fault that the cards are crappy, but we have to blame someone." Blame the shuffler, it has no feelings, I on the other hand do. I also have no control over what cards come out.

The people that bitch and bitch about losing and never leave. They could win a large bet and still be down thousands, you have a problem, and no it's not my fault that you are losing so much. Stop handing me hundreds and leave and then maybe you could get ahead, casino math is not in your favor.

When I come back from a break don't pout about the relief dealer leaving and bitch about me coming back. I don't know who taught you basic courtesy, but that's rude and makes people feel like crap.

    That is all!

I was reading on MSN today that dealers average something like $14,000 a year. At full time hours, I'd make more at Wal-Mart And this was considered a "top" travel/hospitality industry job. Please tell me the tips are much greater than that, or how can people support themselves

And back on-topic, yeah gambling away your paycheck is a pretty tough addiction/pastime.

The odds are always in the favor of the house. Thats why casinos can afford all of those awesome, expensive things. If you wanna gamble, do it with a few bets (of money you can afford to never see again!) and hope you get lucky. Gambling away endlessly just turns a few rolls of the dice into the law of averages, and the average definitely favors the house.

I had a table do this to me and my friend once. We are not dealers and were just patrons and our other friend was playing at tat table.
We wanted to wander around a bit so every once and a while we would come back and check on him to see how he was doing and hang around to watch a couple of hands.
Apparently whenever we showed up people started winning, and when we left they started losing.
The people at the table noticed this the second time we stopped by. After that it was a screaming fit from the people at the table every time we wanted to walk away.
Our friend, as well as the others at this table, was there for an hour or so and we were going back to check on him roughly every 10 minutes.
Every time it was, "HEY WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING, WE WERE WINNING!" and, "HEY GET BACK HERE YOU'RE MY GOOD LUCK CHARM," along with some, "DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT LEAVING AGAIN!" for good measure.

Yeah, because I want to stand around a table of old men while they fritter away their children's college funds. PASS!
Those people had no manners whatsoever.

Well I make 9.15 an hour, for my probationary period, I think it goes up from there, I know other's there make more, 10-15 an hour, plus tips (for most of them). Tips aren't bad, for me they're about an extra $5 an hour, since it's shared, and I get a certain percentage, being new I get a bit less I think. I'm not entirely clear on how it's done. Plus there's decent benifits(medical, dental, and I think optical?) though I don't have benifits yet, since I haven't worked the 16 weeks required for it. I'm in Canada too, so it's probably a bit different here.

I do consider tips extra money though, so I refuse to rely on them, having never had to in any other job. This one doesn't pay that badly either, and gives decent hours. People bitch and complain about tips being crappy, but really, I believe it's up to the customer, if they choose not to tip whatever. I think everyone should work in a job that doesn't get tips before they get into one that does. but I won't get into that conversation here.

I was making more when I was working for the gas station, but that was at least 2 hours of overtime a week, at $10/h ($11/h on graveyards). But with the benifits this is probably worth it, especially dental.

That's just terrible. Some players are crazy like that. I guess it's a good thing I don't get that behaviour, as that way I won't become a big gambler (not that I can play at any of the casinos connected to the company I work for in Canada, which is quite a few, and all of the one's close to me).

It's all about chance, people have to understand that. but of course they don't, go figure.
