I miss Borders as well, Mikoyan. Truly the end of an era! It was the best job I ever had and where I met my best friend, the aforementioned martial-artist moose.

You are all awesome! Thank ya for the replies, this newbie appreciates it.

This story also reminds me of the time I was in a store (Best Buy) and a woman was making a return. She wanted a different CD because she didn't like the CD she bought. Of course she was told they couldn't take it back and give her a CD by a different title, it had to be the same CD. She wasn't taking "no" for an answer. She wasn't being loud, but why people can't see a copywrited item isn't the same as a pair of shoes or a box of cereal?

The SC in the original story sucked much, though keep on calling the manager a "bitch" is low. Glad a bigger dude scared him off. Wanker.

Reminds me of an exchange I witness last weekend at the Bullseye store. I had a return, and as I was waiting in line, I could hear the employee attempting to explain to a customer why they were not able to return the opened R-rated movie her 12 year old had purchased. He kept trying to calmly tell her it was not STORE policy, but actualy copyright law that prevented him from taking it back. She was using every excuse in the book, its r-rated, my son is only 12,etc. But sadly, his hands were tied. Don't know how it ended as I was able to do my return in about 30 seconds.
Bit of a derail here, but I call BS on that on the SC's part, because if the kid had been sold the movie by a store clerk and the kid had been a volunteer as part of a sting operation (and they DO happen...) the clerk and the company could have been facing a VERY stiff fine and possibly some jail time. (here in New Zealand the fine for breaching such restrictions and selling to someone under the listed age are $10,000 and up to 3 months imprisonment for the individual and a further $25,000 fine for the company. Dunno what it is like in other parts of the world but I'm willing to bet the fines are fairly significant there too.

Sadly it is amazing how many store clerks do not card people before selling restricted movies and games.

If it were a legit complaint and my child had been sold a restricted movie I would not be going back to the place he purchased it from - I would be registering a complaint with the Classifications office.

Here in the USA, if a store gets caught selling R-rated movies, M-rated games, or a song with a warning sticker, they might get noted by the Federal Trade Commission. Thanks to the US Constitution, the only thing our governments can do is say bad things about the store.

Catcul, that seems odd, considering the fact that there are other age-restricted items that are so strictly enforced. I have never worked retail or sold such items, so I have no experience with them and cannot comment on the enforcement of such things; I just find the disconnect between one group of age-restricted items and another to be a bit of a head-scratcher.

In the US and Canada there's no legally enforcable age restrictions on Movies and music. Certain Provinces have a legal age restriction on games but not all of them and the US has none at all beyond pornographic content. Any restrictions that occur in those regions that aren't legally mandated are completely voluntary. The same goes for movie theaters as well.

... and if that had taken place in a country where the age ratings are set by the local government rather than by a private organization (such as the MPAA for movies in the US and the ESRB for games in the US and Canada)

At the bullseye, it prompts for id for any age restricted items. Unless we see the actual id we cannot sell that item. Cannot even get past the prompt.

I had similar when I worked retail. I answered the phone one day and on the other end the lunatic was demanding a cash refund for the game he bought with his reason for the return was that the game graphics weren't the same quality as on the case.
Damn, if I'd known that that was a reason for a refund, I could have gotten a full refund for all my Megadrive (Genesis) games!

Movie ratings are rarely enforced outside of theatres (which have a fairly low enforcement in of itself) so that does not surprise me. The level of enforcement on DVD purchases is at around 5% iirc.
