I tried a pedometer once. The problem was I'm 4' 10.5" so whenever I reach for something on my desk I'm reeeeeeeeaching, which kept registering as steps on the pedometer. I knew it wasn't going to work for me when I registered 8,000 steps when I was at my desk most of the day!

For me personally, I found getting into an Augmented Reality game really helped encourage me to get out and about more.

I've been playing Ingress for 3 years now, and it's a great excuse to walk around more, hacking portals, knocking down Frog portals, etc.... (though it can be rough on your phone data plan if you don't have public wifi available ). Ingress is basically geocaching without having to go out into the forest. (Since most of the portals you'll be going after are public sites of interest; libraries, art installations, etc... and you only need to get within a few metres of it to activate)

The same company is making the Pokemon-GO Augmented Reality game as well.
