  • I'm paying cash at check out....

BUT I STILL NEED YOUR CREDIT CARD NOW!!!!

I hate it when people make reservations and HOLD the room with a credit card, but feel that it is not necessary to provide the hotel with the card at check in. They think that giving it over the phone is enough info, and thats all.

Well, some dude and lady come in and dude says there is a reservation for him. This was correct. So I asked for the credit card and of course, he doesn't have it, its his fathers card.

I explain to him that I cannot use the card unless it is provided to me by the card holder. He seemed to understand, so he called his father to see if he can stop by and give us the card (the father is local). After a couple minutes on the phone, he hands it to me (I was expecting this).

Father is AT A CASINO and told me that he will come by later and just give me cash for the room if I let his son into the room now. I wanted to believe that he wasn't like a lot of the dumbass locals that I have met that go to the casino to "win" money, and end up in the red after a few hours, but I wasn't going to take the chance. I told him I cannot let them into the room until payment is settled/secured. He starts cursing on the phone, "dag gummit" (what the hell does that mean anyways?). I hand the phone back to the son. I know whats coming next, they are leaving, no problem.

The son gets the explanation from the father and relays back to me. The father does not want to use the card for payment anyways, he wants to pay cash at check out time. I try again, to explain, that we still require a SECURED payment at check in, and that payment can be handled by cash at check out, but a credit card over the phone is not going to secure the room for two nights.

The son then tells his father, "we're going next door, we'll see if we have luck there". What luck? Are you trying to scam me or something? I let them leave, and called the other hotels to let them know what is coming there way.

    Good luck at the slots!

Personally, I've never understood people who pay for rooms with cash (same goes for rental cars). I always pay with credit when I rent a car or stay at a hotel. Then there is a paper trail if things go wrong for both parties. With cash there is no paper trail, thus one party or the other could be screwed, be it you happen to get a dishonest clerk who steals the cash or the guest in the room steals everything and you can't get the money back for those items. Heck, even when my bf was in the car business and had to stay in hotels they would still require a personal credit card from him even though the room was already paid for by the company. It's common sense because it covers their ass in case something goes wrong, then the company doesn't get charged, only the person causing problems gets the bad news.

Was that guy a true scammer? Who knows, although it is shady that they were refusing to present it. I'm just glad you held up the policy and didn't let them check in without the card.

I agree things are far simpler to just pay by credit/debit card. Maybe it is a generation thing. Also, I find it is easier to pay by whatever card the room was reserved under. I've had trouble changing form of payment (we wanted to use my sister's card instead of mine - she was sharing the room and I had reserved the room using mine) and then still getting charged on the original card. Dammit, grrr. It was my debit card and I was lucky the charges didn't bounce. How hard is it to get the person to understand we want to pay with XX card, not with YY card?

Good for you requesting payment up front instead of on an honors system. Funny how some people just don't get it.

The only problem I've had with that is when the hotel put a hold on the amount from the reservation card. That happened to a friend of mine; she made the reservation but someone else was paying for the room. She found out about the hold when her attempt to pay for her meal that night failed. It came as a shock to her as that was the 1st time any hotel had done that to her.

I can understand the hotel wanting to guarantee getting paid. I can understand wanting a credit card when checking in (same reason).

I can also understand about people who are paranoid about their credit/debt situation preferring to pay cash. Of course, the people I know like that arrange to stay with friends or share a room & pay the person who paid for the room.

This is why we tell our bank customer to never ever EVER use their debit card to pay for or reserve hotels or rental cars. Some of these companies can hold the fee plus up to 100% over the fee to make sure they get paid. They typically also hold these funds until well after you check out. Let's say you rented a car and it was $100 for the week. The rental car company will hold the $100 for the fee plus another $100 as sort of a deposit. You typically won't see similar holds with credit cards, since those funds are pretty much guaranteed anyway.

You wouldn't believe the number of complaints I've gotten from people when I've worked in tourist meccas. They'd be up on vacation and paid for their room on their debit card. Well, they'd then come to either the store I was working at 7 years ago or the tourist trap I was working at a little over a year ago and complain when their card got declined. I'd then ask them if they used the card to pay for their room and/or rental car and when they said yes I'd have to explain about how the holds for these kinds of places work.

When I go on vacation, I make sure I have enough in my checking account to cover the hotel charge, but then I use my credit card to pay and only use my debit card if I want to go to a store or buy food. When I get home I then just pay off the charge to my credit card and all is good.

This is great advice, and a great way to have a hassle-less experience at a hotel/car rental place. We only authorize cards for the full amount of the room, no extra. I remember when I stayed at the Wynn in Vegas. The room was $199 a night or something, but my credit card was authorized for over $1000 during a night stay. Really depends on where you go I guess.

Plus, depending on the credit card, you might have insurance coverage and whatnot for renting a car.

I always use my credit card for large purchases, and then pay it off when the bill comes. I know I have enough in my checking account to cover it, but I'd rather not use my debit card. Plus I get the cash back bonus on Discover so I try to use that whenever I can.

When I was in my friend's wedding, I shared a room with another bridesmaid, and since I got there first I had to use my credit card at check-in. The bride's parents were supposed to be paying for our room, but there was some kind of mixup and we ended up paying for it ourselves (half on each of our cards), and then I got in touch with the bride's mother after I got home. She called the hotel, and they refunded our cards and charged hers. If we had paid cash that would have been a lot more complicated.

I've had guests get very upset when they want to check-in with a reserved credit card, but they don't have the actual card with them. Most of the time, it's because someone else is paying for the room. But we don't know that sure. The only way accept a payment like that is through an authorization letter from the credit card carrier. We do that protect ourselves in cases of fraud or unauthorized use. We also photocopy everyone's ID, regardless if they pay with cash or card. That gets people upset too if they don't have an ID.

Not everyone can get a credit card. With how my credit history is, it is better for me to have a bank card.

when i pay in cash for something big (like i dont know CAR REPAIRS) i want a reciept, because i dont want any problems.

                      Bad credit card people, bad.

oh and the story responce, *Vacuum company* does not do payments with debit cards or check cards.Only credit cards. I will explain it like this if they ask about payment opitions. "You can pay in full with your own credit or debit card, you can apply for a financing offer and if you are approved you have no set payments for 12 full monthes, or if you want to use a credit card we do have a payment plan available." payment plan how does that work. "Well with your CREDIT CARD you can put 25% down and pay off the remaining balance in eleven equal monthly payments" Ok i want to do that. "Ok so you wil be using a debit or credit card" 25% time- Credit card. 25%- Debit card. " SOrry as i already said, only with a credit card. No debit cards." 50% of the time- It has credit on it. "Is it connected to your bank account" yes. "Im sorry that is a debit card, even if your bank extends credit to the account, if you try to use that card for the payment plan you will be deducted the entire ammount."

My favorite was from a guy who called after his order. I didnt take the order. but he called bitching cause he lied bout the card he was using, gave us a debit card for the payment plan (or he wanted to do the payment plan, but couldnt but didnt change his account info, so we billed the whole amount) and well he over drafted when we deducted the entire amount, over 800 dollars, and hes now leaving the town, and has no ags money, I chew him out politly, got A to chew him out politily, and then told him of off him self politily.
