I gained a lot with my first pregnancy, not as much as a friend of mine, though. she was convinced that my son was going to be super tiny because her 9 pound heavyweight was the product of a 50 pound gain in pregnancy. I just ignored her.

Ironically I was at the dentist a while back and a lady in there asked me when I was due. I would have had to have the talk about "Oh, I'm just fat" either way, but I really am pregnant again so I had a clear exit to the comment. Much like some people, I carry a lot of weight on my stomach regardless of whether I'm currently engaged in growing a person, so I'm used to looking pregnant and not actually being so.

I have encountered and (more often) heard of people who say that sort of thing and honestly believe that they are being encouraging to the addressee, in a positive way, rather than flat-out insulting.

Yeah, it sure takes the wind out of your sails when you're 12, just got straight A's, and were so expecting your mom to be a bit impressed....

I don't think I really tried as hard as I could again til I went back to college in my late 20's, and I dont' think I ever even told my mom that I graduated with a 4.0 grade point average.

Nope. It just proves that fat people can be just as asshole-ish as anyone else.

It's about as confusing as being told, by someone who never leaves their bedroom playing video games other than to work and use the bathroom........that my exercise routine (biking, treadmill, weights, etc at least 4 days a week) is too "slow". Yeah, this Olympian couch potato was telling me that the rate I go on the cardio machines is "slow", boasted that he can walk a mile in 7 minutes (You CANNOT WALK a mile in 7 minutes!!) and that he can pedal a mile on an exercise bike in 1 minute.

As a cyclist, I have but one word to all of that person's claims: "Bullshit!"

Your exercise routine is slow? That would make his, what....slow motion? Freeze frame? Reverse?

She's still overweight, yet she makes nasty comments about overweight people and the way they dress and look all the time.

One would think if you've been the target of cruel and nasty comments all your life, you would have the decency and understanding not to do it to others.

The psychologist in me says that she's actually lashing out at herself, using these other fat people as surrogate targets for her own self-hatred.

The logician in me says she's a hypocrite.

The cynic in me says she's just a festering bitch.

I never can remember who's male or female.

Hold on, let me check....yep, I'm definitely male.

Occasionally, though, an enlisted person "crosses over" and becomes an officer. You'd think they'd be the most sympathetic and fair to enlisted, but some of them end up being harsher and harder on enlisted than the regular officers - they love being able to subject others to the worst of the crap they had to take before.

I have seen, on several occasions, servers become managers, and so many of those that do so become the worst managers, often being bitchy, rude, hypocritical, lazy, and playing power games. It's stupid, really. But then, these people were probably already asshats, just without the managerial (or officer) power.

As I often do, I have a quote that illustrates my point. But uncharacteristically of me, this is not a quote from George Carlin, but from Pat Benatar. I recently finished her autobiography, and highly recommend it....and in it she had this pearl of wisdom:

"The conversation usually starts this way: I'll meet someone who asks me how I seem so grounded, so normal. Maybe they'll tell me about an encounter they had with a rock star who acted like a complete asshole. The truth is the way I am now is the way I've always been. People who get rich and act like idiots were always that way--only now they have money."
