Poor woman probably had cracked nipples. It happens. Nothing to do with teeth.

Ironically, when they bite you, it doesn't usually draw blood. At least in my experience.

By the time a woman gets to the stage this woman was at; had given birth just a couple weeks ago, trouble breastfeeding, everyone and her brother seeing and discussing her stuff in the hospital, breasts becoming more general child care equipment than personal space, sleep deprivation, the unrelenting physical pain and anxiety of poorly progressing breastfeeding, overwhelmed with the overal upheaval of having a newborn in the house, this chick just didn't give a flying fk at a rolling doughnut anymore. Just whip out a nasty breast pad? Sure. Whatev. Feh.

Believe me, sister, I been there.
TESTIFY!! CAN I GET AN AMEN?!?!?

    Hallelujah!

Dear LORD did I have a hell of a time with my little guy. He had a shortened frenulum (ligament under the tongue) and other fun problems that kept him from latching well for the first month or so. As for biting, well, he still gets the good stuff, but from a bottle. He never learned that "don't bite" thing too well, and I couldn't blame him it hurts to teethe he was biting everything. So I switched him to the bottle (with the orthodontic nipples) and my LC and pediatrician were telling me "you can teach him not to do that!" One day I gave up my cool and said "LOOK. If I had wanted them pierced I would have paid a professional in a sterile parlor to do it, not rely on my son!"

    Shut 'em up.

You don't want to put anything like that on your nipple when you're breastfeeding. You dont' want your baby getting either thing in their mouth.
      o yeah good point.

as for the teeth part... i was just remembering back when mom was doing babysitting for extra cash... The baby's teeth were coming in and i guess he took a bite. So, the woman decided "now's a good time to wean!" (not sure how old the baby was tho cos this was liek well over 10 years ago)

but i stand by my other comment... i'll prolly go to hell or have karma creep up on me

I had a shortened frenulum when I was born, too. My tongue was pretty much stuck to the bottom of my mouth with a sheet of tissue.

My sister is always going, "I cannot BELIEVE you had her tongue freed!"

Sometimes babies are born with teeth?

Ok, yet another reason I will never have children. It's bad enough when I'm wearing a low cut shirt and Baby scratches me there.

My mother, oddly enough still has it, and has a slight speech impediment because of it. When the little 'un turned out to have the same thing, she started working on him using his natural inclination to mimic to get him to "click" his tongue. She swore it would help stretch the frenulum so it wouldn't need clipping. That and using the orthodontic nipples on bottles so he had to suck to get the food out, helped a lot. Never did have to get him clipped.

Yeah I agree with the other "no biggie" mom replies. When you are sleep deprived and have already shown your nipples / breastfeeding technique to a a bunch of strangers (nurses), you get numb to it.
Another mom at preschool was saying how her eldest boy is facinated with the breast pump, he will stare at her pumping away.

Mine was pretty profoundly stuck, I understand. They kind of had to clip it. I imagine I'd have a pretty bad speech problem, otherwise.

The underside of my tongue has a long, raised white line that runs out to the tip. I always wondered if that was a little scar or something where they cut it.

                  Yep.

                  Sometimes one tooth, sometimes more.

It's been considered lucky in the past.

Bag balm is bad. Especially for breastfeeding. It has some heavy metals in it that are particularly bad for brain development in the long run. Shea butter and coconut milk (unless it's actually the congealed coconut milk foodstuff) is also not likely to be good for baby. Lansinoh is what all the midwives, breastfeeding specialists, Certified Nurse Midwives and OB/GYN doctors have suggested to my wife to avoid or help with dryed out, cracked or bleeding nipples. My wife swears by it. Even so it didn't stop my wife from getting a crack on her nipples when we had our second child. But it did help it heal a LOT faster and made breastfeeding tolerable (is what she said) until it was healed.

My sister in law actually had a minor bacterial infection in the nipple ducts that caused them to swell shut (is this called thrush?). The doctor put her on amoxicillin and she was fine after about 4 or 5 days. She said it was quite painful but once they had her on the antibiotic the pain left fairly quickly.

Bottom line is if you breastfeed and there is a problem get to a doctor (that supports breastfeeding) or breastfeeding specialist before it gets bad. Don't wait!!

In our area there are stores that cater specifically to expectant and new mothers. They carry breastfeeding supplies (bras, pumps, pads, Lansinoh and breastfeeding aids) maternity clothes and baby supplies. The place we had luck with was the lactation station

                            http://www.lactationstation.com/

Your state health department should also have resources and literature for sources of help for those who choose to breastfeed.

Now I'm going to go bury my head in the sand so y'all don't get burned by my flaming red cheeks. (I'm blushing like mad)

You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take, and statistically speaking, 99% of the shots you do take.

I don't know what it's called, but it's not thrush. Thrush is a yeast infection of the mouth. Eeewwww! Never had one, don't want one. I have enough problems with my mouth breaking out in canker sores (From stress, I'm surprised I don't have any now with finals next week.).
It's floating wicker propelled by fire!

Yep, I am firmly with the moms here. No big deal at all. By the time I left the hospital with my first baby, I know longer knew what privacy was.
All three of my babies were given breast milk, though I had to pump because I have inverted nipples and never could get any of them to latch well.
