You mean you can't sell me the display model? That's poor customer service!

Happens all the time where I work, especially since all of our furniture has a week turn around time at the earliest. People want the display model, and when I refuse to sell it to them, it's "bad customer service."

Actually, it's illegal. If you advertise something and don't have it on display, it's classic bait and switch.

Try explaining that to a customer.

SC: "Why won't you sell it to me?"
Me: "Well, then people that want to see it come in and I don't have one for display, that's illegal."
SC: "So? Sell it to me!"
Me: "What would have happened if I sold it to the person that came in here before you that wanted it, and you came in to look at it and it wasn't here? Wouldn't you be mad?"
    SC: :blank stare:
    Me: :dies a little inside:

oh, good point. Though I can imagine someone crying "bait and switch!" when the furniture in the sales ad is one color, say, red, and you don't have red anymore, just black. "but the ad shows a red one!" even though there's a disclaimer saying "item might not be the same color in store." No, don't bother the read the small print, SC.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

I wonder if it would legal for you to mark the display piece as "sold"? I have seen items so marked in stores near me, although others of the same item were on display.

Maybe not, but it probably wouldn't deter a true SC anyway...

I had a family member purchase one of my widgetmasters for their mom for Christmas.

I only one left, so I slapped a sold tag on the floor model.

Mom comes into the store and wants to buy the widgemaster for her husband for Christmas.

            Real difficult situation.

I ended up telling Mom that the widgemaster was going to be replaced by the widgetbaster the first of the year and the widgetbaster was a better unit and would be cheaper.

              See ya!
My thoughts exactly! You're probably better off without her as a customer, anyway. I can only imagine the tantrum she would throw should anything ever go wrong with it.
