  • Monty Hall Has Made His Last Deal (RIP)

Monty Hall has passed away at the age of 96.

Awww. May he rest in peace. At 96, at least he had a good run.

I'd think he'd get a bang out of that.

Rest in peace, Monty. You will be missed.

          BUT WAIT!

Keep the coffin you chose, or trade it for what's in the hearse parked over there?

I'm sure Monty himself would appreciate these jokes.

Monty Hall left his name and most famous game to an interesting statistics puzzle, with a non-obvious answer.

The Monty Hall Problem runs as follows: You've chosen one of the three doors. Before you open it, Monty opens one of the other doors, revealing a goat, then offers you the option to switch your choice to the other closed door. The puzzle is, should you (1) stick to your choice, (2) switch to the other door, or (3) It doesn't matter?

I''ll give you a moment, and a few lines, to consider, also a couple of random comments.

              .

              .

Kit-Ginevra: I titled my repost elsewhere "Monty Hall finds out what's behind the final door".

              .

              .

Which in turn leads to what really should be a cartoon, with St. Peter offering him three doors....

              .

              .

And then there's the tale of someone who opened their door to see a goat, but his reaction was unexpected: "Oooh, a goat! I will love him and hug him and call him George!"

              .

              .

The answer to the puzzle is that it does matter, and you should switch your choice. Without getting into the math, the upshot is that your original choice had a random 1 in 3 chance of being right. But the door Monty opened was not random, he knows which door has the prize and opened one that didn't. If you chose right the first time, that doesn't matter -- but if you didn't, it does matter -- and combining those cases gives the door he didn't choose a higher chance of having the prize.
