  • Alternative career options for visually impaired

So I have a friend who has been on disability for this past year due to losing vision in one eye and having poor vision in the other. He doesn't want to exist on disability the rest of his life. Prior to this, he was a teacher with special needs students for the school district (middle school level). He also has experience working as a cashier and seafood specialist at a grocery store.

His remaining vision is variable. Some days he can read and drive; other days both of those are out. He won't be able to always rely on making it into work or being able to read documents, which is why I am turning to the forum to see if anyone has any creative ideas for what jobs he could potentially perform. Any ideas?

I had a coworker at intuit (turbo tax etc.) who was visually impaired severely and worked in IT. He was amazing at his job and used huge magnifiers to work on things but he was really amazing at getting things back up and running. He knew our knowledge base by heart and would dictate his notes using the dragon program and that was 12 years back. I hope your friend keeps up hope. Here in AZ they have amazing schools that help the visually impaired find a second carrier. Military personnel and other people come here to learn new skills at the deaf and blind school and they teach people even later in life.

Transcription work, assuming he can type quickly.
