New Forum Activity: A CS Book Club!
----------------------------------------
Earlier this month, I discovered GoodReads. Since then, I've been playing around with the idea of a CS book club. I've spoken with Raps, and the mods, and haven't gotten any reasons not to do it. However, I have gotten reasons and approval to try.
So, I set up a private group on Goodreads for us. I haven't added books to the shelf, or set up a poll, not yet. Over on GoodReads, we'll maintain the history, the polls, etc.
Now, a major reason to use them is that they have quite a few sites they link to to help people find the books for dirt cheap, so that will help keep costs down for people who want to buy instead of borrow from friends or the library.
For now, the first order of business: If you want to participate, get on GoodReads, and join our group, and post a book suggestion over here. In a week, I'll set up a poll over on GoodReads, and we'll run that poll there to pick the book. A week later, we'll kick off the reading.
The only real rules we're going to have on suggestions are to avoid hard covers and difficult/impossible to find books. We want people to be able to participate, and not have to spend a lot of money to do so.
For now, I'll throw a few suggestions out there:
I've tried to throw a bunch there from a variety of genres. I don't want to limit us to one specific genre, or even fiction/non-fiction. I would expect that what we're reading is going to vary a lot from month to month. So, if you're interested, sign up on GoodReads, and post a book choice here (the second part is optional, but I hope people will participate in helping us choose the next book).
Looking forward to seeing you there!
EDIT: I've made this into an actual poll over on GoodReads. What Should We Read?. I'd like to turn this thread into more discussion, and less individual title suggestion. You can vote on one of the books that are already there, or you can write a vote in and vote for it. The poll is open as of now, and closes as of March 15.
And yes, I'm being lazy. Already, I needed to copy 17 titles. I'd rather not copy another hundred
