You can have some fun pranks with them though. If you get the old planchettes that have the three legs which are about a half inch tall, you can have some real fun.
The two people with the planchette have to be in on the prank. Along with the "target."
You set up on a long table with the "target" at the far end of the table and the two with the board at the other end. What you do is this. You tie a very fine fishing line to the front leg of the planchette. Then this line is run down to the end of the table and back around to where you are. (under the table.) Once the game gets going, you ask several questions and then when everyone is paying more attention to the board than anything else (best done in a dimmed room) you ask. "Is anyone here in danger?" Then the two with the planchette move it to yes. Next you ask who. Then you start making it quiver faster and faster before letting it stop. When no one is paying attention you snatch the fishing line. This causes the planchette to slide across the table into the lap of the "target." They quickly slip off the fishing line and then look scared.
