i tunes not recognising i phone or ipad mini

This has been going on for a few weeks now, ever since the latest i tune update.

When I plug it in I can charge my items (i phone 5s and i pad mini), transfer photos to my computer but iTunes won't/can't recognize my items. all software is up to date.

I've tried multiple plugs, including proprietary and non proprietary plugs. rebooting many times, reinstalling iTunes, and checked authorizations .

anything else I can do?

well it was I suspected it was iTunes and the latest update seems to have solved it
