    Me: yea Dave, I called yesterday and spoke with a young lady and she said I cant get a discount

    Guest: for which unit?

    He tells me
    Me
    : ok sir, I will go ahead and apply that discount for you

    Guest: but I havent told you my name or member number, I am a member of the welcome back club (note: it is actually comeback club, not welcome back club)

    Me: that's fine, I can offer you the discount

    Guest: but why arent you asking for my name and membership number first? You just give discounts to anyone that asks for one?

    Me: I will get your name when you book the reservation

    Guest: but what about my membership number?

    Me: I dont need that

    Guest: but how will you know I am a member of the welcome back club?

    Me: your name is in the system if you have rented with us before

    Guest: you're not doing this right, you need to have my membership number

    Me: (not wanting to continue this silly argument) ok give me your membership number

    he tells me

    Guest: now repeat that back to me

    I repeat it back to him

    Guest: I just feel like you are giving me this discount to shut me up and not because you think I deserve it.

    Me: why do you say that?

    Guest: because you didnt even care that I am a member of the welcome back club and you would have given that discount to anyone

    Me: sir, I gave you the discount and even had to override it in the system to do it

    Guest: its the principal

    Me: ok I'll tell you what, since you have been our customer for many years and t show you we appreciate your business, I will give you an additional 5% off

    Guest: I didnt ask for more money off

    Me: well sir, I am trying to help....what do I have to make this right with you?

    Guest: when I started coming here 12 years ago, everyone was so helpful but things have changed and it gets worse every year, you people just dont care anymore. This is just a job to you but it's our vacation and we spend a lot of money there....(and on and on and on for about 10 minutes)

    Me: sir again, I want to help you but I need you to help me help you...its obvious that you're upset but what have I done to make you upset? I dont understand

    Guest: I will tell you what you did. First you didnt even apologize for that girl insulting me and not giving me a discount despite my telling her I am a member of the welcome back club. Then, you just casually say yea I'll give you a discount like I am nobody. I happen to be a member of the welcome back club.

    Me: I know sir, you've told me that several times now

    Guest: you're a little asshole, you know that

    Me: sir, this call is over. I tried to help you and went above and beyond and if you cant appreciate that, I am terribly sorry but I cant and wont listen to you call me names

    Guest: you're gonna........(hung up after this man wasted 26 minutes of my life)

    Wow, someone who didn't like the way you were handing out thier freebies.... there really ARE some people who are never happy

      I would have started laughing. Okay, dude, what else is there for me to do? You do realize that you are complaining about saving money, right? Would you prefer not to? Okay, done. You don't get the discount. Because I care enough to make sure that only good, loyal, decent guests who appreciate our services get the special discount.

        Wasn't your way of appologizing for the girl giving him the discount without agrument???

        And since you didn't specify every little thing...he was mad? omg my head hurts. lame.

          what... he complained about you giving him a discount... my guests don't care why I'm giving them discounts, they're normally just happy to get them

            I've had my share of assholes like that. No pleasing them no matter what you do, even when your actions were for something they didn't deserve. It must be Snowbird season again.

                obviously he hasn't learned teh first rule of phone-in. YOu, the customer don't know what info in what order the person with the computer needs- and it seems to change every so often to keep us on our toes (or heels). It seems to work better to let the person with the computer ask questions.

                Now if this person feels so disrespected at teh drop of a hat, aren't you glad he isn't a blood relation?

                  "welcome back club?"

                  Sounds like the guy was afraid that he wasn't "special" enough if you didn't know his membership number, or that with the membership number he might get an even more "exclusive" discount or more fawning. I don't know how you could put up with it as long as you did!

                    If you had him jumping through hoops for a discount, that is bad.
                    If you just offer a discount because he complained about a previous cs, that is bad.

                    Obviously he's one of those people who thinks that no one is as special as him, and when someone else (ie, everybody else) is treated special, then obviously you are upsetting the balance of the universe.

                    I bet he would kick the the puppy of a blind old woman who was treated with deference (for ex., she came after him but she was waited on first).

                          Ithink he just called up looking for a fight. He had been denied his discount, which he believed he was entitled to (And apparently he was), and he had a whole righteous head of steam built up, ready to crash through the barricades of resistance, and wrest from your grasping claws the discoutn he so rightfully deserved.

                          And then you gave him his discount without any sort of fight or hassel, but also without any sort of supplication that he could accept sas cowering surrender before his toweright might and rage. You completely neutered his Charge of the Lightweight Brigade.

                          That's what he was mad about. He was all set to wage a battle, and either cow you into submission and get his discount, or deal a striking moral blow against the company by taking his business elsewhere.

                          What terrible customer service, to provide excellent customer service in this situation!

                              Ohhh, I can tell you what cruise line this person uses.
                              See, there are some past cruisers clubs that not only get them a discount (that often isn't better than the residency or early bird discount) but also gets them the all so precious past cruiser's cocktail party and other perks. I have several clients that will only cruise a certain line because they like the "special snowflake" perks that come with being in the club.
