  • Old Boss New Boss

So I am on my second week at my new hotel job, and it's SO much better than my old job. Here's why, presented in a handy comparison chart.

Old Boss: No breaks, no lunches, no food or water where guests can see you eating or drinking, and no helping yourself to free breakfast bag items or water bottles. Those are for guests.
New Boss: A full hot meal is served every shift. Taking a lunch break (at minimum) is mandatory.

Old Boss: Wear only the uniform we give you. You are drones that must look alike.
New Boss: Wear non-slip shoes so you don’t fall and bonk your head. Other than that, as long as you're dressed like an adult (translation: business casual), wear what you want.

Old Boss: How about working at 7am for three days then 3pm for two days, every week, for months.
New Boss: I’ll keep your schedule as consistent as I can. I want you to be your best and you can’t do that without proper sleep.

Old Boss: No Facebook, no Customers Suck, no Anything that might relieve stress.
New Boss: I don’t care if you’re on social media or other sites as long as you get your job done and you aren’t watching porn. However, if you walk away and leave Facebook up, I’m going to post something on your feed that will make your friends laugh at you.

Old Boss: I’m not going to talk about family or pets, I’m an office drone with no life
New Boss: Office Kitty! (Said was apparently found as a tiny abandoned kitten and taken in, and has lived in the offices ever since and is now a HUGE gray Maine Coon. While one person is responsible for him as far as food and vet care, everyone is allowed to pet him).

Old Boss: Why sure, start jack-hammering the floor of the kitchen (where noise will travel up to the roof) at 10pm, I can't see any problem with that!
New Boss (hotel is under renovations): Workers will stop at 5pm sharp.

More as I think of them.

That's great that your new boss is so much more reasonable than your old one. I was happy when our old boss got replaced, then sad when we got our newer boss.

Old Boss *completely at random, after saying nothing for six months* You're not supposed to do the paperwork like that! You do it like this! *dramatic sigh*
New Boss *after a week of observation* So, the paperwork should actually be done like this, 'kay?
Newer Boss*on her first day* Uh, why are you doing it like this.... (I respond) Well, that's not right because blahblahblah, you do it like this.

Hope things get better with Newer Boss notalwaysright. Maybe she's just direct? How's her competence level? I can deal with somewhat abrasive personalities as long as they aren't emanating from idiots.

Grats on catching a good manager. I wish I could wear my own clothes for once to work. They make us wear this dowdy shirt and a scarf that makes me nervous to wear next to hostile guest. I'm thinking of asking my GM for casual Friday where you can wear you own clothes. She might laugh but do it, or maybe she'll say no b/c of corporate. IDK.

I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

Good managers are worth their weight in gold! I hope this one sticks around, WishfulSpirit

I wish I could get away without having to wear my uniform but as a security guard I'm very much expected to wear the boring thing. Oh well, such is life!

Kitty doesn't seem to like cameras but he pretty much looks exactly like this:

Just curious, but how many comped rooms/complaints to corporate about being unable to sleep due to noisy construction work being done on the hotel in the middle of the night?

We had to comp about 20 rooms. I'm sure the losses from that were acceptable compared to just doing it the next day. It wasn't urgent, but sure let's wake everyone up.

IIRC, my hotel consultant aunt once told me that the rule-of-thumb is that a hotel needs to average half paying custys to break even.

Maybe but I was the one who got yelled at while he was at home with his family. And if you think I got so much as a thank you for dealing with the fallout of his decision, I know a member of the Nigerian royal family who needs help with a few simple financial transactions.
