    Bit of (somewhat) related trivia - for merchant ships, it used to be that their size in tons meant how many tuns (size of barrel) they could carry. Warships (not being built to carry cargo) were rated in tons displacement (i.e. actual weight). Interesting that a butt (half-tun) of wine weighs 1200 pounds- so a tun would weigh roughly a long ton.

      That ties in nicely with the fact that you'd load long-tons of cargo at origin, and expect to sell the equivalent number of short-tons at the destination, due to a certain percentage of spoilage and spillage en route.
