Gah. I'm beginning to appreciate my online addiction more and more-- it may be a lot smaller than the big games, but at least most of the people are very laid back in it. Come to think of it, some of that is by design: after a couple hours, the game itself will give you a message indicating that you've been playing for a long time, and maybe a break is in order.
Guild Wars, I'm going to guess? I know it pops up little "You have been playing for X hours" messages, and at 3+ hours adds in "Please take a break."
    Dealer hits... 21. Table loses.

This happens more often than most people want to believe.

I wanna say FFXI did that -- if you were logged in for, say, four hours in a row, it would drop a gentle reminder in chat that you might want to take five.

That still exists today, in a lot of MMO's. WoW had a lot of guilds like that. Which is why in both guilds I was in (one of which I created and lead) the very first rules was "Real Life > Game; We understand if something comes up."
I've actually vetted guilds in more than one game before joining them. Some actually have rules -- spoken or otherwise -- that, if you are not present for, say, 3 raids out of every 5, you're out of the guild. I always preferred the "come raid if you want to" guilds ^_^

WoW has an option to set that too.

Puzzle Pirates, actually. If you ever stop by that way, I play on the Emerald Ocean [server], using the same name.

Given that I work with video games professionally, and have for a long time now, most MMOs-- the ones that are basically what I've worked with for damn near forever, only online-- don't appeal to me. This is the only one that has managed to keep my interest more than a couple weeks, mostly because it's not mostly about reflexes, but still has more depth and needed brain power than any Facebook game.

Anytime someone tried to start drama about someone not showing up for a raid or event for whatever reason it would be that person who was warned and punished.
Since I got involved in pro wrestling "e-fedding," every fed I've been in has pretty had this, Rule One = Real Life Always Comes First.

I would never get involved in anything online that expected me to put it first and foremost ahead of real life.

I just don't understand when people bring their pets. Like a Chihuahua in a purse. The dog can stay home. Who gives a shit if it's a lucky charm; just bring a picture of Poochie.
Part of the problem is that the gambler's going to be there so long that the DOG will give a shit. Of course, owner doesn't want crap in her purse, so she'll take a couple seconds away from the machine to set Poochie down on the floor (after all, it's not HER carpet). Taking the dog outside to do its business? No way - too much time away from the one-armed bandit.
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

Many online games do that. The original EQ added settings for it. Puzzle Pirates has a message about it. Some other game I used to play would do it, too.

                Ahoy, matey!

Ditto on Ocean and name. Well, just Andara, but you get the idea.

Casual core guilds are always the best.

Less drama, less stress, and usually much more like playing a game instead of having a job.
