Sixteen-bit colour still allows for 65536 distinct colours, which is rather more than most people can find descriptive names for.

The most comprehensive (and unambiguous) colour naming scheme I know is based on the 216-colour (6x6x6) Web colour palette. This in turn was intended for compatibility with computers supporting only 8-bit colour, leaving 40 colours of the 256 available for other purposes.

From a linguistic point of view, many languages of the world still don't have separate words for green and blue. Even today, aoi in Japanese can mean either "sky colour" or "forest colour", depending on context, though midori definitely means "green".
