I must be weird. Ok, I know I'm weird, but I almost never abbreviate place names when speaking. When I'm writing I will, but when I'm speaking, I can't see any point to knocking a syllable or two off just to be lazy or cute.

I was thinking the same thing. There are only a handful of place names I will abbreviate when speaking, and I always say state names, not initials.

Let's see: Philly, DC, LA, St. Pete, Etown (that's Elizabethtown, PA, where I went to school, and I only use that with my friends or family, not people who've never heard of the place), I can't really think of any others...I'm from New Jersey and I don't even usually say AC. I'll say "Jersey" in conversation, but if I'm giving information, I'll always say full names for everything (even the "Avenue" in my address). New York City is often referred to as just "the City," but if you get much further south of me you could just as easily be talking about Philly...
