  • Refund or no. You decide.

    Well, not really.

So, anyway, this all happened on Sally's shift, and she told me about it.

Last night (3/7) at ~5:00PM a woman checks in on an Expedia reservation.

At ~8:00PM she comes back to the desk demanding a CASH refund because she doesn't feel safe due to the fact that our parking lot is almost vacant (it's a weekday in March). She wants to go elsewhere, but doesn't have the money, and insists we refund her in cash so she has the money to go somewhere else.

Sally refuses, and tells her that since she booked through Expedia, they are the ones she has to go through to get a refund.

She then complains that she asked for a fridge and didn't get one. Sally informs her that sometimes the requests made through Expedia don't come through to us, but that we would be happy to provide her with a fridge, for an additional $10.00 charge.

    She refuses the fridge.

Tonight (3/8) at ~10:00PM Sally gets a call from Expedia asking if there is any reason to discount/refund her. Expedia says the "lady" has complained that there are cobwebs all over the room (not mentioned to the desk). Sally informs Expedia that she is STILL HERE (her Res. was for 2 nights).

Lady will not get a refund from Expedia.

Cash for a reservation she paid for with a CC? I'm smelling a scam.

I'm wondering if she hadn't left herself enough cash to eat out somewhere, and thought she'd go to a cheaper hotel and use the difference for the meal?
Hence the fridge - when the first request didn't fly, she thought maybe she'd get herself a little something to eat in the room instead?

I'm sorry - since when did the parking lot being vacant have any bearing on the safety of the room?

It doesn't. Scammy guest is scammy.

And if hotels are anything like retail, refunds are given in a manner consistent with payment. Hence anything purchased with a credit card is refunded back to the card.

I seem to recall one member posting about a certain time of year when they get a lot of renters from bicyclists. As such, they would put their bikes in their rooms. Must be very unsafe at that time of year.

Let me answer the question posed. No. Wait..that isn't it. *searches deep within myself for the answer* Oh no. While a legitimate complaint could be met with a refund, it always....ALWAYS goes back to the method of payment.

It's even bigger than that. The guest doesn't pay us, the hotel, at all. Expedia and the like pays us. So, yeah!

What it sounds like is she was fishing for a double refund. Demand it from the hotel and then turn around and demand it from Expedia.

Unless there were prostitutes, gang bangers or drugs dealers...but then the lot would technically not be vacant.

She must have spent the three hours from 5 to 8 pm trying to come up with something to complain about to try to justify her refund....and all she could come up with was "I don't feel safe because....uh...because....I know! Because the parking lot is empty!! Which clearly indicates...uh...something bad...."
