  • RIP Levon Helm

Drummer and singer for The Band, Levon Helm, died recently of cancer. I didn't see a thread, so I thought I would start one on this.
Low lie the Fields of Athenry/ Where once we watched the small free birds fly/ Our love was on the wing/ we had dreams and songs to sing/ It's so lonely around the Fields of Athenry

I can't say I'm an expert on The Band but I did have a couple of favorite songs, like "The Weight" and "Up on Cripple Creek". RIP Levon.

Not only was he an accomplished musician, he was also a known character actor in several films.

His first film role was in Coal Miner's Daughter as Loretta Lynn's father. He also appeared in "The Right Stuff" and "The Dollmaker" (the latter with Jane Fonda, which IMO is a damn good film.)

He even inspired the hit Elton John song "Levon."

Rest in peace . . .you've earned your wings.

        I always wondered about that!
