I was working register and a lady comes up and her purchase comes to like $10.49 or something like that. Well she lays down 50 cents and looks at me. I say, "Ma'am, your total is $10.49." She snarls, "I HANDED you a $10!!!" I say, a little sharply, "NO ma'am you did NOT..," because there was no fucking $10 in sight, she never laid one down. She then looks down into her purse, sees the $10 bill, rolls her eyes and thrusts a $10 at me. No apologies or anything. I hope she was embarrassed.

Of course not, because it was obviously your fault!
The customer is always right, and therefore if the customer tells you they handed you a $10, then they did. And proving the customer is wrong is just bad customer service. You should give her a free TV for her emotional pain and distress!Check out my webcomic!

I had one lady make a purchase of over $100, and she wanted to pay in all $20s. Me being terrible at doing math in my head told her that I needed six bills from her, but in reality I needed seven. After she gave them to me, I counted them out, and thought it over and went, wait a second, this isn't enough. So I turned to her and told her that I needed another $20. Bad things happened, and she got very upset and basically accused me of trying to swindle money from her. She luckily had a way to prove to herself by recounting the money that was in the bank's envelope, and sure enough, I was not trying to swindle her money. I think she apologized after that, but for a little while there she was sure turning into an SC. It was my fault just as much as hers because early mornings + me = a case of teh stoopid. Meh, all worked out in the end.Jim: Fact: Bears eat beets. Bears. Beets. Battlestar Gallactica.

Ha, I've had that happen, where somebody's total was something like $10.50 and they gave me the change and that was it. And you tell them you need the rest of the money and they look at you like you've got goo seeping out the side of your head. "But didn't I just give you the ten?"
Um, no. If you had given me the ten I wouldn't be asking you for it.

We don't have our own money. We get paid at the end of our tenure.
I've get people insisting that I was given a twenty dollar bill rather than the ten dollar bill that I'm holding, but I've never had someone insist that I'd been given a ten dollar bill when I hadn't been given anything at all. You're not doing me a favor by eating here. I'm doing you a favor by feeding you.

One time, I had a lady INSIST that she handed me a $50 bill when in reality she only handed me a $20. LUCKILY.. I did not have any other $50 bills in my till, and I literally had to pull my cash drawer out and go through my money and show her that I only had $20's and $100's. She finally said, "Oh.. then I must have left my $50 at home." I'm not sure if she was trying to shortchange me or if she genuinely thought she handed me a $50. I hope the latter.

Quoth RammsteinGirl View PostWhy did she need to know how many $20's she needed to pay for her purchase..? Couldn't she just count it out, "$20..$40..$60..$80..," etc.? I don't understand why she needed to ask you how many $20 bills she needed.. unless she couldn't count in increments of 20.

My boyfriend has recently escaped retail, but a few weeks before he left he had a conversation that went like this:
Him: That's £3.99 please [or whatever]
SC: *Hands over £10 note*
Him: *Runs transaction through, gives her back change*
SC: I gave you a £20.
Him: No, you gave me a £10.
SC: I gave you a £20, young man. I think you'll find you need to give me the rest of my change.
Him: No, you gave me a £10. *Pops drawer* There isn't a £20 in the till. So you can't have given me a £20.
SC: ... Then it must be in your pocket. I think it's disgusting.
Him: *turns out pockets* There is nothing in my pockets. You gave me a £10 note.
SC: Well if that were true I'd still have the £20 in my purse, wouldn't I... *checks purse* ... oh.
Then she left, no apology or anything. Bloody moose.

I never ran into this problem.
Mainly because the rule at my first and only cashiering job was to put the bills you received onto the top of the till until after you had given out the change. Then, you would till the bills and close the drawer.
Of course, we were also in little enclosures, so there was no chance of anyone grabbing at the money, either.
