I had a woman call the store today to tell me that we "RIPPED!" her off.
She'd been in on Sunday and purchased lunch for her husband and her daughter. The total was $21.00 (which she had to mention was just a little too expensive for lunch), but after checking her bank account today, she noticed we had charged her $80.00. Even.
Back up, wait a minute. This poses some questions for me.
1. How do you not notice at the time of purchase that you're being charged almost $60.00 more than the total?
2. Our cash registers have integrated debit. We cannot alter the amount between the total on the register and the debit pin pad.
3. Why have my books balanced for that day?
4. How come I cannot find any debit transaction for that day with the items you say you purchased on them?
Of course, I couldn't ask those questions, but I did ask some others:
1. Are you sure it was our location? (she replied yes, and even named off other nearby businesses she visited while here).
2. Did you buy gas while you were here? (We share a site with a gasbar/convenience store)
3. Are you positive of the items you purchased?
Anyhow, I had to go back in our POS system and check all the sales for that day (lovely, wonderful, great fun) to look for anything that resembled her described transaction. I found one sale that matched what she said was purchased. It was paid for in cash
Then when I try to call her back, I get the answering machine.
I really did want to resolve the situation. I don't trust our POS software one bit, but omg....$80.00 even? At a sandwich store?
Also, her story changed the second time I spoke with her. It wasn't her making the purchase, it was her husband. She mentioned something about asking him why he just didn't pay cash for that amount. And hubby didn't keep the reciept.
She also said the bank told her the charge came from someplace called Jemmart/Subway. Never heard of them. I know banks will shorten company names on customer's accounts but I'm pretty sure that Jemmart/Subway is not my store. It doesn't even resemble the company that owns my site.
I think that the whole family stopped for lunch on their way home from a weekend at the cottage. Mom and one daughter went to the burger place next door, while Dad and daughter #2 came into my site. Mom has no idea dad paid cash for the food (for whatever reason), And they have both forgotten that they stopped to fill their gas guzzling SUV/MiniVan/4X4 Truck with fuel on the way home.
Can anyone think of another weekend expenditure that works out to $80.00 even?
