  • You could have gone to the other store and been done already.

Last night, SC walks up, 15 minutes past closing, and pounds on the door.

I walk up, know that he can't seem to read the 'hours' sign posted just to his right, about 2-3 feet away, and point to it.

    Pounds on the door again.

I open the sliding doors slightly and asks if he needs help.

He says he needs ink for his printer and paper.

I say sorry, closed, come back tomorrow or try WalMart, or even Best Buy (which is open 1-2 hours later than we are, and just down the road).

Guy says he doesn't want to make another stop.

Sorry, we're closed and the registers have been pulled. I can't make any kind of transaction on them, even if I wanted to.

Guy asks if we could just open one of them so he can get the stuff he needs.

No, once they're pulled, that's it. End of business day.

Guy starts saying I am giving bad customer service, gonna complain to corporate, blah blah blah...

I told him he can think what he wants and do what he likes other than come in here to buy things since the store is closed and there is no way to process the sale.

My manager comes out from counting drawers and sees me arguing with the guy. Comes over, asks what the deal is.

Guy says i am being difficult. I told manager the story of it all, and he finally tells the guy we're closed, registers are pulled. Sorry, come back tomorrow or find another store nearby.

    Guy refuses.

Manager states that if he doesn't leave the premises, police will be called.

    Guy finally leaves.

Start time of this argument: 6:15
End time of this argument: 6:40

BestBuy is literally only two blocks away. They have ink for every kind of printer imagineable. They have paper too. WalMart is about 5 miles, but still. He could have probably gotten his ink and paper sooner and been done shopping by the time the conversation ended.

Ah, but it's the PRINCIPLE of the matter....

I had a guy do the same thing to me, his truck broke down, so we towed it back to our garage. Our mechanic had gone home for day, so the earliest we could have someone look at it was the next day. He didn't want that, he wanted it looked at NOW. There was nobody who could do that at our garage, so we suggest we could tow him an extra mile to the dealership. That wasn't good enough, his motor club garunteed he'd be towed somewhere where his truck could be fixed NOW, and that's what he wanted. We again explained that wouldn't be possible. So then, he wanted towed home, home for him was 2 states away. We told him we'd do it, but, he'd be responsible for paying since his motor club wouldn't cover that long a tow. He wouldn't have any of that either, so he called his motor club.

He spent 3 HOURS arguing with them on his cellphone and yelling at me for not being able to do anything to "help him out" since it was "my fault" that nobody could look at his truck at our garage until tomorrow. Finaly, after calling everyone he could think of, he agreed that he'd pay for the extra mile to the dealership. (Total cost for 1 overage mile, $2.50)

Only that he'd spent so much time arguing with us, they too had closed. He had to get a hotel room and wait out the repair the next morning....

I wouldn't have opened the gate for the guy, FuzzyKitten99.

Exactly. The problem starts when you answer the door. Just don't.

Acknowledging him. That was a mistake.

That was your biggest mistake. If the store is closed and they are outside they don't exist.

You're closed. You're not expected to give him any kind of customer service and he shouldn't be expecting it. The sad part is that even if you posted a 4m x 3m neon sign with a system that point lasers on the guy banging on the door after closing hours, they'd still find a way to ignore it.

The only reason I opened the doors (the gate was only 1/4 the way down, but the doors were locked) is that he looked frantic and panicked about something. I thought maybe there was trouble and he needed help or for someone to call 911. At that point if he needed that assistance, I would have not let him in, but just dialed from my cell. Plus being American Red Cross CPR & First Aid certified, I may have been needed as far as assistance.

I always acknowledge people standing at the doors after closing.

I like to point and laugh at them. I also enjoy the look of hope on their faces when they see me approaching, then the disappointed look when I shake my head and veer away.

That guy in the 1st post really has poor timekeeping skills as well as control issues.

God, I wish I could get away with that. With my luck, though, they'd most likely call corporate and try to get me fired.

I have to be honest - I can't really get away with it either. I definitely enjoy turning pushy latecomers away, but I'm usually pretty polite.

It just means we wait to point and laugh until their backs are turned.
