  • Driver updates?

I've got an HP 110-210 that was purchased in 2014 but not used until 2015. It runs just fine, and has Windows 10 on it. Well, this afternoon I came up with an issue I've never seen before.

I've got an old HP Officejet 6310 All-in-one printer/scanner/fax that I've primarily used for printing and scanning since my retirement. This afternoon I put a picture into the scanner and pressed the "scan" button, and it just sat there until I eventually had to pull the plug to get it to wake back up. Then, the computer started telling me I needed a bunch of driver updates - for a fee. Now, I will freely admit that I'm a tightwad, and I'd rather not pay for something unless there is no other option, especially computer programs. I use F-Secure for my antivirus program, for which we pay for a household subscription, and it does a very good job of stopping malware. However, in the past before I got Windows 10 I was never asked to pay for driver updates.

Is this the only way to get driver updates now, paying for a subscription? Or is some company just trying to part me from Turtleguy's hard-earned cash on the assumption that I wouldn't know better? Any ideas?

It's bullshit. Big companies like HP/Epson/etc, in particular, will have free updates going back YEARS. You got yerself some malware. Try running the usual...

    MalWareBytes (and their Anti-Ransomware applet)
    SpyBot: Search & Destroy
ADWCleaner (I find it's really useful for nuking persistent stuff like Conduit/SearchProtect)
Any other AV/Spyware tools you have access to

I guarantee you that it's the malicious program that's messing up your printer communication.

I thought as much. I asked Turtleguy when he got home, and he said much the same thing. I've heard of/used all the AV/spyware tools you mention except for ADWCleaner, so I will give those a spin. F-Secure, the antivirus/anti-malware program we use, is quite good at stopping the bad stuff, too. Thanks for the help.

          NP. I hope it helps!

If all else fails, try running the AV/spyware progs from Safe Mode. If THAT doesn't work, see if you can boot to a flash drive loaded with them, that has been set up on a completely separate computer.
