Oh yeah, I love people who make comments like that when I refuse to make change for them without a purchase. Yes, dumbasses, in case you didn't notice, this place of business was established to make money, not give it.

On the rare occasions when I have to deal with large bills (as a customer, not a cashier) - meaning over £20 - I always do my level best to avoid breaking such a big note on a small purchase. Even if it's "only" a £20 note, I'll try to use something smaller if I'm buying something small. Normally I have nothing bigger than £20, so a £50 (or equivalent) feels uncomfortably large to me.
I have once dealt with a set of €200 notes though. But since I was using those to pay a large sum all at once, it didn't matter.
