I must resolve to be less of an idiot. For the past two workdays, my inner dumbass has been in rare form.
I was getting lottery scratch-offs for a customer when the pack ran out. The customer wanted more of that particular ticket, so we would have to get more out of the safe. I don't know what happened to my brain, but for some reason I decided to ask my boss quite loudly if the safe was open - right there in front of a line of customers! As soon as the words left my mouth, I mentally facepalmed myself, and when the store was empty again I remarked to my boss, "That was a really stupid thing to say." He wholeheartedly agreed, and he spent the rest of the day teasing me. I am still hearing those words in my head and kicking myself in the rear, two days later.

We had our gasoline pump islands repainted today, and it was an elaborate job. The painters had to cover the pumps themselves in plastic and then erect a sort of tarped "cage" around them to contain the paint. It took them an hour just to set up for the job, after they had already waited two hours for it to stop raining and for the ground to dry. They had just finished erecting their barrier when I noticed one of the ice bin merchandisers needed drained. I took it outside and opened the plug as usual, letting the water roll down the parking lot...and directly under the paint barrier.
A bit later, one of the painters came in to mention it to my boss. He was really pretty nice about it, but I distinctly remember the word "destroyed" in his description of what the water had done to their work. I can just imagine the names they were calling me inside their little wall, as they Shop-Vac'ed up the water that had seeped into their work zone. I did offer to buy them both lunch as an apology of sorts, but they politely declined.
